Priyanka Reddy was a 26-year-old veterinary doctor who was allegedly raped and killed on November 27, 2019.[1]
Significance of the case
The rape and murder left everyone in shock across the country. Politicians like Rahul Gandhi[2], K. T. Rama Rao, Pawan Kalyan, etc., expressed shock over what happened near Rajiv Gandhi International Airport.[3] Outrage began across the country to furnish a new set of rules for rapists.[4] A half-burnt corpse of another rape victim was found nearby, and police engaged in their investigation.[5] Three police personnel of Shamshabad airport police station were suspended for delaying in lodging the complaint of the missing woman.[6] After their arrest, protesters gathered at the Shadnagar police station and protested, demanding the culprits be hanged or encountered.[7]
Early background and personal life
Priyanka Reddy was born in 1993 to Sridhar Reddy. She pursued a degree in veterinary college in Rajendra Nagar.[8] She worked as an assistant veterinarian at a state-run hospital at Kollur village.[9][10]
The Murder
Telangana Police Department says: Priyanka Reddy had parked her two-wheeler near Tondupally toll plaza, which attracted the attention of two lorry drivers and their cleaners. They deflated her two-wheeler's tire while she was absent.[11] After returning from her job, she noticed the flat tyre and called her sister. Later, the accused pretended to help her and ambushed her into nearby bushes. They sexually assaulted and killed her.[12] They then drove her body in a lorry and burnt it around 2:00 to 2:30 am near a Shadnagar culvert on Hyderabad Outer Ring road.[13] Police arrested the four accused based on evidence gathered from CCTV cameras and Priyanka's mobile.[14]
Judgement
The magistrate ordered the police to move the four accused to judicial custody for 14 days at Cherlapally Central Jail.[15]
