The 2013 Karaikal gang rape case involved a rape that occurred on 24 December 2013 in Karaikal, located in the state of Tamil Nadu, when a 20-year-old female was gang raped when she had arrived there with her friend. Initially, she was raped by a gang of three men who had abducted her before. Then, she was again abducted by a gang of eight members, after which, six of them took turns to rape her.[2] A total of 14 accused had been arrested, with 4 friends of victim arrested for not informing the police of abduction.[2]

Unlike Delhi gang rape case that shook the nation a year before, this incident did not receive much outrage from Indian public.

Incident[edit]

On the night of 24 December 2013, the victim had went for sightseeing in Karaikal, a coastal town in Tamil Nadu, India, accompanied by her friend and her friend's boyfriend. While coming back to home, the victim was abducted by a group of three men, who was noted by the victim as watching her for a while. She was taken to a secluded place. One of the person in this group is alleged to have raped her.[3] The woman was then released and while she went searching for her friends, she was abducted by a gang of seven, of which, six of them took turns to rape her. When her friends confronted the gang of rapists, a clash broke out which was alerted to the police by a local.[3]

Arrests[edit]

The police arrested three of them on the spot. Seven other men were arrested later. Two police officers had been suspended due to their lapse in handling this crime.[3] Four friends of the victim, namely Madhan, Ezhilarasan, Baburaj and a minor, were arrested for not informing the police about the abduction.[2] One of the accused, Nasser, was earlier convicted for a gang rape in 1994. Initially sentenced to three years imprisonment, the sentence was later commuted to 18 months and a fine of Rs. 5,000 in 1999[4]

Reactions[edit]

DMK leader A.M.H Nasser appeared on an English news channel and told that he wanted police to check on the character of the rape victim.[4]
