Prabodhkumar Sanyal (Script error: The function "langx" does not exist.; July 7, 1905 – April 17, 1983) was a renowned Bengali writer, journalist and traveller. He was a popular figure in the writers' group of the Kallol era. He was a very popular for his travelogue.

Early life

His father's name was Rajendralal Sanyal. He was born on 7 July, 1905 at 4 number Radhanath Bose lane in Goabagan, Calcutta. He became a fatherless at an early age and was raised by his maternal uncle. He completed his education at The Scottish Church Collegiate School and City College in Kolkata. At the call of Mahatma Gandhi, he joined the Non-Cooperation Movement and was imprisoned. He took up various professions for his livelihood. In 1927, he went to the remote areas of North-West India as a clerk in the army. He also worked in the postal department, in a printing press, and in a fish farm.

Literature career

After his first story 'Marjana' was published in Kallol Patrika, he became known as a regular writer of the Kallol group. His first novel was Yajabar (1928). The travelogue 'Mahaprasthaner Pothe' occupied a special place in Bengali literature. Two world wars, national movements, partition, riots, etc. left their mark on his literature. He presided over the All India Bengal Literature Conference in 1956 and 57. Apart from Kallol, he regularly wrote in newspapers such as Bijli, Swadesh, Dunduvi, Padatik, Forward, Banglar Katha and edited Bijli, Swadesh, the weekly Jugantar Sahitya Patrika and Swadesh Patrika. While he was the editor of Swadesh Patrika, he was once accused of treason.

Travel

He traveled to many parts of Asia, Europe, America and Russia. His vast experience helped him write travelogues. As a traveling writer, he holds a unique place in Bengali literature. He spent a long time in the remote regions of the Himalayas. In 1932, he traveled to Kedarnath and Badrinath and later traveled on foot from Hrishikesh to the hill town of Ranikhet, about 400 miles in 38 days. He wrote the story of that experience, 'On the Path of the Great Departure'.From 1932 to 1936, he traveled to various places near the Himalayas for four long years. His book 'Devattama Himalaya' was published based on his travel experience, the life, culture, society and contact with various people of various provinces of the Himalayas. In 1978, he also went to the North Pole at the age of 72. He was the founding president of the Calcutta Himalayan Association and the Himalayan Federation. In 1957, he visited Pakistan as part of the Indian cultural delegation. He represented India at the Afro-Asian Literature Conference in Tashkent.

Literature works

He was regular writer for the Forward magazine in English and Banglar Katha magazine in Bengali. After reading his novel Mahaprasthaner Pathe, Rabindranath Tagore himself said, 'Your language takes the reader's mind out on the road'. Author of nearly 150 books, Prabodh Kumar's famous books are:

Many successful films have been made based on his stories. Among them are, Kaach Kata Hire, Pushpadhanu, Priyo Bandhabi etc. His best work 'Mahaprasthaner Pathe' was made into a film in 1952 by New Theatres. The director was Kartik Chatterjee. This film was released in Hindi as Yatrik.

Awards

In recognition of his literary work, Prabodh Kumar Sanyal received the Calcutta University Gold Medal in 1911, the Sisir Kumar Puraskar, Motilal Puraskar (1910), Sarat Puraskar. He received Ananda Puraskar in 1980.

Death

He died on 17 July 1983 at age of 78 in his 6, Ballygunge Terrace Residence in Calcutta.
