Prof. Frederick Kwaku Sarfo (PhD)[edit]

Prof. Frederick Kwaku Sarfo is a professor of Educational/Instructional Technology, and the first Vice-Chancellor of the Akenten Appiah-Menka University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development (AAMUSTED), Kumasi, Ghana.[1][2][3]

Early life and education[edit]

Born in Kumasi, Prof Sarfo had his Basic Education at Jamasi R/C Primary and Bipoah L/A Schools. He also attended Asante Mampong R/C Experimental School, where he passed the Common Entrance Examination. He studied for his Ordinary Level Examinations at Agona Seventh Day Adventist Secondary School and Osei Tutu Secondary School, Akropong. He attended Sixth Form at Tweneboah Koduah Secondary School, Kumawu in the Ashanti Region. He received his first degree in Psychology from the University of Ghana. He was awarded a Netherlands University Foundation for International Corporation (NUFFIC) Scholarship to pursue a Master's degree in Education and Training at the University of Twente, the Netherlands. He successfully completed the programme in good time and returned to Ghana. When he joined the then College of Technology Education, Kumasi (COLTEK)-University College of Education of Winneba (UCEW) in 1999 as an Assistant Lecturer, he was awarded a Ghana Government Scholarship for PhD studies in Educational Sciences (Educational/Instructional Technology) at the Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium.[4] His PhD research focused on "The effect of Powerful Learning Environment (Competency-Based Learning Environment) with and without ICT and the Moderating Effect of instructional conceptions". Prof. Sarfo has a certificate in Wireless and Mobile Technology in Education and other certificates in education and management training to his credit.

Career[edit]

Prof. Sarfo’s teaching experience spans over thirty (30) years. Before his appointment as Assistant Lecturer at the College of Technology Education, UCEW, he was the Education and Training Officer at the Manpower and Training Division of the Ghana Education Service, Accra. He has been teaching, conducting research and providing consultancy services in Instructional and Educational Technology; Human Performance Technology as well as Curriculum and Instruction; General Principles and Methods of Teaching; Competency Based Training (in TVET), etc. He teaches several courses at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

His research interest, among others, focuses on the integration of ICT in education; designing competency-based learning environments for the development of technical and vocational expertise; instructional design in line with (Four Component Instructional Design Model {4C/ID Model}; first five principles of instruction; events of instruction, etc) in learning environments with adequate, moderate and limited ICT resources for the acquisition of critical thinking skills in mathematics, science and technical subjects; instructional conceptions; instructional supervision and history of education, among others. He has facilitated the development of over thirty courses at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

Prof. Sarfo has contributed extensively to knowledge in his area of expertise with over fifty (50) publications to his credit. He has authored and co-authored five books and book chapters. He has participated in and presented papers at both local and international conferences. Some of his scientific research works have been published in journals with high impact factor, international encyclopedias; International Compendium of Theory, Research and Policy; and other scientific books of reading. He is an editor and executive peer reviewer for several local and international journals as well as conference papers.

In 2007, Professor Sarfo won the UEW Best Researcher and Lecturer Award in the Sciences.
