Dr.Humaid Alshamsi is a board-certified medical oncologist with clinical and research-fellowship training and experience in gastrointestinal oncology. He is a clinical researcher who excels in providing exceptional evidence-based patient care in the UAE. His board certifications are in Internal medicine and Medical oncology from the UK, Canada and the USA. He is the first and only graduate of the Sheikh Khalifa distinguished physicians’ scholarship program from MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas, USA http://www.khalifafoundation.ae/ar-ae/Media-Center/News/Pages/أول-إستشاري-خريج-بعثة-رئيس-الدولة-للأطباء-المتميزين.aspx . He is the only physician in UAE specialized in gastrointestinal oncology. He actively participates in continuing education and teaching activities, including clinical teaching for medical students, residents, and primary care providers, focusing on knowledge sharing and improving cancer care in the UAE. Dr.Al-Shamsi is an active researcher with extensive research in the filed of Gastrointestinal Oncology with over 20 peer reviewed articles (https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Humaid_Al-Shamsi ). His primary area of research is in the field of correlation between clinical phenotypes and cancer cells’ somatic mutation in gastrointestinal cancers. He led a group of clinical researchers from MD Anderson Cancer Center, University of Texas to collaborate with researchers from the Mayo Clinic Rochester, Minnesota, USA. The group identified a new subtype of colorectal cancer after evaluating around 10,000 patients with colorectal cancers using next generation sequencing technology. This was the largest study to date conducted on the colorectal cancer patients, and the findings were published in one of the highest impact oncology journals (Journal of Clinical Oncology) in August 2017 along with a special editorial from an expert in the field praising the new findings. The paper has since been cited thirty-nine times in less than a year from the time of the publication. The paper has been also featured in multiple news stories on groundbreaking research ( https://www.practiceupdate.com/content/non-v600-braf-mutations-define-a-distinct-subtype-of-metastatic-crc/53084). Dr. Alshamsi also published the first paper evaluating somatic gene mutations using next generation sequencing in an Arab population with Colorectal cancer , which describes key findings in this rarely studied population and will be the basis of future studies in this population ( http://jgo.amegroups.com/article/viewFile/10606/pdf ). Other significant work includes a detailed description of a newly identified rare type of cholangiocarcinoma for the first time (BAP1 Mutation Associated Cholangiocarcinoma)(https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4963380/).
Since moving to the UAE from the USA , Dr. Alshamsi has been an active member of the Emirates Oncology Association. He led and formed the UAE oncology taskforce in collaboration with oncologists from across the UAE aimed at identifying gaps in cancer care and providing a practical solution for improving Cancer Care in the UAE (work in progress , draft attached ). Currently Dr. Alshamsi is studying variations between the Arab population and the western population in relation to cancer demographics and how these variations may affect the adoption of Western guidelines into local practices in the UAE (e.g. screenings for common cancers). This is manifested in a first paper currently undergoing publication: “Breast cancer screening in the United Arab Emirates: Is it time to call for a screening at an earlier age? . He is also a public speaker and advocate for increasing public awareness about the importance of early cancer screening. Dr. Alshamsi’s vision is to improve cancer care in the UAE by stimulating greater investment in cancer research in the UAE, improving access for all patients to quality cancer care, increasing the public trust in Cancer Care in the UAE ( http://ascopubs.org/doi/pdf/10.1200/JGO.17.00087 ), and educating the next generation of oncologists in the UAE by establishing the country’s first fellowship clinical and research training program.
