Pychess is a chess variant server[2], an Internet chess server designed to play a growing list of chess variants. Users of the site can play online chess anonymously or use a Lichess account to login and play rated games. Features include chess variants (but also standard chess), chess puzzles, computer analysis, and tournaments (called 'arenas'). Pychess is free and open-source, ad-free, and all the features are available for free, as the site is funded by donations from patrons.

History

Pychess was created by Hungarian programmer and Lichess user Bajusz Tamás (gbtami) in 2018-2019, building on several independent contributions.[3]

On 19 April 2019, the Pychess-Variants server was published on GitHub and a few days later, on 23 April 2019, an announcement was posted on the Lichess forum. [4]
