The Qabusiye massacre occurred on 4 June 2017 near the village of Qabusiye, south of Sinjar, Iraq. According to Human Rights Watch, 52 civilians were executed by members of the Êzîdxan Protection Force, a Yazidi militia. The justification of the Killings was that the arabs of Al-Jahaysh and Al-Metweti tribes cooperated with the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria. However, local residents and survivors denied these claims, stating that the victims had no ties to ISIS.[2][3][4][5][6]

Massacre

The victims were reportedly captured while fleeing fighting between ISIS and pro-government forces in northwestern Iraq. They were detained for two days in an abandoned village before being executed.[7][2][8] Investigators later found personal effects at the site, including sandals, prayer beads, and hair tufts, consistent with evidence of mass execution.[2]

Members of the Êzîdxan Protection Force accused the Al-Bu Metewut tribe of collaborating with ISIS during the group's occupation of Sinjar. However, local residents and survivors denied these claims, stating that the victims had no ties to ISIS.[2] A legal adviser for the militia confirmed their role in the killings and threatened further violence if members of the tribe attempted to return to the area.[9]

Aftermath

Human Rights Watch condemned the killings as sectarian revenge attacks and called for accountability. The Iraqi government condemned the killings, and a legal adviser to the Êzîdxan Protection Force confirmed their involvement, stating that they would kill any Metewti tribe members attempting to return to Sinjar.[9]
