The Aqrah massacre occurred in 1833 when Muhammad Pasha and his soldiers attacked Yazidi communities in the Aqrah region and along the Greater Zab river.[1] Approximately 500 Yazidis were killed during this assault.[2][3][4]
Afterwards, Muhammad Pasha’s forces attacked Yazidis living in Sinjar, killing many more.[5]
This campaign was triggered when Mullah Yahya from the Mzurî tribe sought Muhammad Pasha’s help in a feud after a Yazidi tribal leader killed a Mzurî leader.[6] Muhammad Pasha issued a fatwa declaring the Yazidis "infidels" and crossed the Great Zab to carry out a punitive expedition.[7]
Muhammad Pasha also captured Akre and oppressed the Yazidis in those newly conquered areas.[8]
