RSS Guard is a free and open source news aggregator for feeds and podcasts. It is written in C++ and using Qt which allows it to fit with the look and feel of different operating systems while remaining cross-platform application. Its distinguishing features are advanced proxy support, file downloader, support of external web browsers and external tools by which can be opened pictures or videos of the articles.
RSS Guard is released under GPL v3 license and available for Windows, macOS, and various Linux distributions.
Features
Supported Formats
RSS Guard supports various feed formats: RSS/RDF, Atom, JSON Feed, as well as podcasts.
The application can synchronize data with online feeds like Tiny Tiny RSS, Nextcloud News, Feedly; feed readers which using Google Reader API such as FreshRSS, The Old Reader, Bazqux; and may even act as simple e-mail client for Gmail.
Feed Auto-updating
RSS Guard can be configured to fetch feeds within regular intervals, while enhanced feed updating offer the user availability to configure update intervals for each feed separately.
Layouts
RSS Guard is highly customizable. User may hide menu, toolbars, statusbar, and even list's header to achieve an utmost minimalism in main window layout. For users who has ultra widescreen monitor, RSS Guard offers horizontal layout, which places the articles viewer to the right side of the articles list.
Database
Data of the feeds can be stored in database files of several switchable back-ends:
RSS Guard also supports the ability to import and export the database file to/from OPML 2.0[1] and the settings configuration.
Recycling Bin
RSS Guard is coupled with its own Recycling Bin to prevent accidental loss of the articles.[2] After emptying Recycle bin, removed articles will not appear in the list any more even after fetching. Actual deleting of articles and their cache from the database should be done through built-in tool which allows the user to cleanup the database file.
Labels
With RSS Guard user may sort articles by labels. Labels can be assigned to each and every article individually, and can be synchronized with built-in account plugins which support it (currently Inoreader, Google Reader and Tiny Tiny RSS).
In addition, to assign or remove labels of articles can be used script-filters.
Scriptable Filtering
Power users may find useful scriptable article filtering. By creating the filters, which may be applied to each feed separately, using JavaScript, user can automatically extract specified data of the articles.[3] Filtering system triggered at the time when new articles of the feed are being fetched.
Scraping of the Websites
For power users RSS Guard also has the websites' scraping feature. User can scrape the data from websites, which does not offer support of neither RSS nor Atom feeds, by writing custom Python scripts.[4]
Versions
RSS Guard offers two different versions:
- Standard version with embedded web viewer, and web browser for accessing the web pages[5]
- Lightweight version with simple text-based viewer.
