Raft (3D Printing)

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

What is a Raft[edit]

A raft is basically a platform underneath a print. It helps balance the print and prevent warping, mainly when printing using ABS plastic.

[1][2]

When to Use a Raft[edit]

Warping[edit]

Some 3D Printing materials, such as ABS are prone to warping issues.[3][4][5]

Poor Bed Adhesion[edit]

Rafts increase the surface area of a print with a mesh surface, which increases bed adhesion.[3][4][5]

Small Legs[edit]

Adding a raft to prints with tiny features at their base will help them to carry the load of the print.[3][4]

Pros & Cons[edit]

Pros[edit]

  • Your print will have better bed adhesion[3][4][5][6]
  • The first layer will be stronger[3][4]

Cons[edit]

  • You might break your print when removing the raft[7]
  • Higher filament usage[3][4]
  • Rough finish on the underside of a print[7]
  • It is tedious, and possibly dangerous to remove the raft[3][4][8]
