Re Dai Wang Shi (Are You Lonesome Tonight?) is a 2021 Chinese drama film directed by Shipei Wen, with Ning Hao serving as executive producer. The film stars Eddie Peng and Sylvia Chang.

Synopsis[edit]

Xueming (Eddie Peng) is a young AC repairman. On a dark and hot Summer night somewhere in the South of China, he hits a pedestrian with his car and flees the scene. Guilt-ridden, he desperately seeks out the dead man's widow, Mrs. Liang (Sylvia Chang), and they very quickly start to cultivate an unlikely friendship. Meanwhile, Chen, the detective in charge of the investigation, discovers that the body of the man Xueming hit was riddled with bullets. When Xueming finds out, he gets entangled in a web of troubles he had not foreseen.[2]

On March 1, 2021, it was announced that the movie would be sold by Wild Bunch.[3][4] In June 2021, it was announced that the film would premiere as part of the official selection at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival in the Séances Spéciales section.[5] [6] [7] [8][9] [10] [11] [12] In July 2021, it was announced that the film would be part of the Toronto International Film Festival as part of the Contemporary World Cinema lineup,[13] and in August 2021 it was announced that the film would screen at the San Sebastián International Film Festival in the Perlak category, among films by Paul Verhoeven, François Ozon, Sean Baker and Céline Sciamma.[14][15] The film screened at the Reims Polar Film Festival 2022, where it won the Jury Award, presided by Niels Arestrup. Are You Lonesome Tonight? was released in China on June 12, 2021,[18] and placed third at the weekend box office, behind Never Stop and Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway.[19]

Reception[edit]

Kate Taylor from the Globe and Mail called it an 'original and engaging' film,,[20] John Berry from Screen International noted the film for its atmosphere and attention to details,[21] while Laura Tuillier from Libération mentioned the film's determination but overall lack of freshness..[22] Out of 6 reviews, the film holds a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes[23]
