Rebecca Glasscock is the stage name of Javier José Rivera Nieves Flores, a Puerto Rican former drag queen and model best known for appearing on Season One of RuPaul’s Drag Race, where she placed third.

Early life

Javier José Rivera Nieves Flores was born on May 24, 1982, in San Juan, Puerto Rico. He is the youngest of five siblings, and was raised Catholic. When Flores was ten years old, his family moved to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and he attended Piper High School in Sunrise, Florida. There, he discovered an interest in theatre and gained his first theatrical role, which was the role of Randolph McAffee in Bye Bye Birdie. After graduation, Flores attended the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras Campus on a theatre scholarship.[1]

Career

In 2001, at the age of 19, Flores was attending a gay bar when his friend, a bartender, commented that he “would only need lip gloss and mascara to look like a girl”. Flores took that as a challenge, so he and his friend Andy both showed up to the bar the next night in drag to surprise their friend, and ended up performing multiple times a week at the bar.[1]

Flores’ original drag name was Roxy Lame, but it was eventually forgone for her current name. It originates from a combination of “Rebecca”, his then-best friend’s name, and “Glasscock”, a name he spotted in a magazine while driving in a car with his drag mother, Misty Eyez.[1]

In 2009, Glasscock was cast in the pilot season of RuPaul’s Drag Race, where she won two challenges and placed third overall after losing in the finale to BeBe Zahara Benet and Nina Flowers. Right before the season, she had moved to New York to continue her drag career, and became a licensed real estate agent in the state while living there.[1]

In 2016, Glasscock announced that she was retiring from drag. In 2021, she quoted that, “I had a lot of fun being Rebecca for many years, she gave me the confidence that I didn't have as a young gay man and she allowed me to express myself artistically and tap into many different talents. I traveled all over and met many wonderful people along the way. In 2016, I reached a point in my life where Rebecca needed to step aside to allow Javier to grow and blossom.”[2]

In 2018, in celebration of the tenth anniversary of the series, Glasscock briefly appeared in drag for the RuPaul’s Drag Race Season Ten finale, where she lip synced with Season Ten alum Dusty Ray Bottoms.

Personal life

Since his retirement from drag, Flores/Glasscock has worked a variety of careers. He has worked as a model since 2016, winning such titles as Mr. Stonewall, briefly worked as a skincare sales associate at a Bloomingdale’s department store, and, as of 2021, has been working as a flight attendant since 2019.[3][1]

He resides in Wilton Manors, Florida with his husband, who is of Brazilian descent.[1]
