Script error: No such module "AfC submission catcheck". The Regent bookshop was established in the 1960's at 73 Parkway NW1 by Jack Elmont and his stepson Peter Bergman. Camden Town in the 1960s was predominantly working class but gentrification was starting and The Regent Bookshop became a popular destination for London's literati. The shop prospered and became a haunt of notable literary figures.

Beryl Bainbridge, Alan Bennett, Victor Pritchett ,Jonathan Miller ,Angus Wilson and Martin Amis were all regular patrons as well as some more colourful Camden characters as Ms Shepherd , The Lady In The Van.

The end of the net book agreement made the viability of all independent bookshops more difficult and with competition from on line booksellers and general fierce discounting on the high street it closed its doors in 2005. In response to the closure Alan Bennett made a plea at the Cheltenham Book Festival to boycott chain booksellers in favour of independents to save further losses of local shops.
