The Turkish urban renewal project is a megaproject that aims to replace the old, earthquake-prone buildings with newer ones in the future 20 years. The project is mainly concentrated in Istanbul. The urban renewal law was passed in 2012 and the working-class neighbourhood of Fikirtepe in Kadıköy was chosen as a pilot area. The projects have now been implemented all around Turkey, like Ankara, Izmir and Bursa.[1]

Examples[edit]

Istanbul[edit]

Most of the urban renewal projects in Turkey are focused on Istanbul mainly because of the active North Anatolian Fault line. A possible earthquake could cause the collapse of nearly 48 thousand buildings.[2] Most buildings in Istanbul are older than 50 years and are made to the pre 199 earthquake building standards. Thus, most of the buildings in or around Istanbul have a possibility to collapse or be seriously damaged. The urban renewal project in Istanbul started in 2012 in Fikirtepe, Kadıköy.[3] After 2012, multiple projects have been started around Istanbul. For example; Esenler[4], Zeytinburnu, Kirazlıtepe[5], Beyoğlu-Okmeydanı-Piyalepaşa[6], Kadıköy-Göztepe, Kartal-Orhantepe, Büyükçekmece, Beylikdüzü, Başakşehir-Kayabaşı[7], Silivri[8], Kağıthane, Alibeyköy, Tozkoparan[9], Eyüp, Gaziosmanpaşa, Bağcılar, Avcılar, Sulukule and Fatih.
