Rehmat Aziz Khan Chitrali (Urdu: رحمت عزیز چترالی‎, Khowar: رحمت عزیز چھتراری‎) is a Pakistani linguist and poet who is active in the study of the languages of Northern Pakistan.[3] He is a linguist activist who has created an orthography, dictionary, and even a translator for the Khowar language, his native language.[4] He has even started a translation of the Quran into Khowar.

Personal Life[edit]

Chitrali was born to Dur Khan and Bibi Hoorana Begum on 25 April, 1970. His father is a member of the Khoshey tribe while his mother is a member of the Ziley tribe, both of which are part of the Kho people.[5] He is former president of Anjuman-e-Taraqui-e-Khowar and Khowar Academy.[6] He is working for Chitraro Hawaz or "Voice of Chitral" (چھتارو ہواز) at ATV Khyber Media Group as well as Khyber News newspapers in Khowar. During the Taliban takeover of many parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa including Chitral, he edited on Wikipedia and became the leader of the new Khowar Wikipedia project.[2]

Awards[edit]

Chitrali was awarded the Dr.Abdul Qadeer Khan Gold Medal Award 2015 in 2015 by Nazriya-e-Pakistan Council for his contributions to the Languages of Pakistan.[7]

In 2009, the Karachi branch of Anjuman-e-Tarraqui-e-Khowar demanded that the Civil Award be awarded to him as well as a road named after him somewhere in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.[8]

Works[edit]

Chitrali has worked on a software called KHOWAR which supports many languages including Shina, Balti, Pashto, Kohistani, Dameli, Gujari, Dari, Ormuri, Yidgha, Hindko, Pahari-Pothwari, and Torwali and of course Khowar.[9] He said he worked 2 hours daily to create a keyboard software for them and nearly 40 other languages.

Rehmat Aziz Chitrali has created dictionaries for Burushaski and Khowar.[10][10] Chitrali's poetry in the Khowar language, Muhammad (Peace be Upon him), a version of Naatiya Poetry won 3rd place at a national level in the National Seerath.[11] He has also created a vocabulary book for Khowar.[12]
