Rence (born Jackson Lawrence Hirsh, February 1, 1996) is an American pop singer, songwriter and producer from Seattle and Washington, D.C., living in Los Angeles. The name Rence comes from his middle name. He independently released his breakout single, "Baby Blue," which hit 16 million streams in 2021. Rence signed with Epic Records at age 21, in June 2019, then toured and released a steady stream of critically acclaimed songs. Lyrical Lemonade said he was “one of the most promising vocalists in the music industry right now.”[1] He crossed 670,000 monthly listeners on Spotify.
Career[edit]
Rence graduated from New York University in 2019[2][3] and started his career DJing at parties.[4] While at NYU, he wrote, produced, performed and released his own music, while also producing music for others. Among his early releases was his first EP, “Pink,” in April 2018, which included the breakthrough single “Baby Blue.” That same week, the video was released, and the song was No. 8 on Spotify’s New Music Friday playlist and featured on Apple Music’s Best of the Week.[5] Epic Records announced on June 13, 2019, that it signed Rence in a competitive environment, negotiating cross-country in meetings and phone calls while Rence was studying for pre-graduation finals and writing term papers.[6] A week later, on June 21, 2019, Epic released “Expensive (feat. Noah Cyrus)”, Rence’s debut song with the label.
He opened for Yung Gravy at Chicago club Subterranean during Lollapalooza 2019,[7] just after signing with Epic, and then opened on national tours with Ryan Caraveo and Christian French in 2019. Rence continued to write and release music though the pandemic, including what Earmilk called the “catchy pop song” “Tears in December” about his move from New York to Los Angeles, and the timely “Sometimes Things Fall Apart.”[8] Those were followed quickly by “Strawberry Blonde.” In his hometown of Seattle, KING5’s Evening magazine dedicated a segment to him on his 23rd birthday,[9] piggybacking on his new TikTok success.[10] The success of "Endless" led to a coveted Saturday appearance on the BMI Stage at Lollapalooza 2021.[11]
One of Rence's favorite songs, “I Know” he prizes "due to its universality in his life," about it he said, “It simultaneously feels like a song I wrote this year and when I was 16."[12]
Reception[edit]
Nylon said the song "Baby Blue" “made waves and introduced him into the world as an artist.’[13] His single “Ways to Go” was Zane Lowe’s World Record Debut on Apple Music’s Beats 1 in March 2019.[14] A July 2019 feature noted his crossover reach and ability to maintain his “independence in an industry full of clones.”[15] His climb continued with a second EP, “Fall 2019,” and the songs “Type 2’’ and “I Know." A late 2020 “Bringin’ It Backwards” podcast interview with American Songwriter pulled it all together, from his early influences to his musical vision for the future.[16] The release of the song “Endless” won strong reviews,[10] as did its high-concept video.[17] In 2021, OutLoud Culture called Rence "buzzing" and said that his new song "AWOOO!" "continue[d] to a kaleidoscopic of pop hits."[18]
