Renu Raj (born 21 May 1987) is an Indian bureaucrat and medical doctor who is part of the Indian Administrative Service in Kerala.[2] She was the 16th sub-collector of Devikulam, Idukki. She is currently serving as the Director of Kerala State Urban Affairs.

Early life and education[edit]

Renu hails from Changanassery in Kottayam district of Kerala.[2] She is the elder daughter of M. K. Rajakumaran Nair and B. N. Latha. Her father was a Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) employee.[3] She has one younger sister, Remya Raj, who is also a doctor.[4]

Renu did her schooling from St. Teresa's Higher Secondary School and Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from Government Medical College, Kottayam.[3]

After house surgency she joined the Kerala State Civil Services Academy, Trivandrum for a six-month course. Renu elected Malayalam as her optional subject for the Civil Services Examination. She secured second rank (AIR 2) in the Examination.[5]

Career[edit]

Renu was a doctor before she began her civil service career and continues to practice medicine. She worked in an Employees' State Insurance (ESI) hospital at Kalluvathukkal in south Kerala’s Kollam district.[4]

On 3 July 2017, Renu Raj was appointed as the assistant secretary to Ministry of Tribal Affairs for a period of three months, after completing phase II training at Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration, Mussorie.[6]

On 28 September 2017, Renu took charge as the sub-collector of Thrissur district. In December 2017, she received an anonymous call, informing about illegal mining activities happening in a quarry owned by former Mullurkara panchayat president and CPM leader M H Abdul Salam and his five brothers located in Vazhakode, Thrissur. The quarry was operating under a license for breaking stones from wells for agricultural needs. She seized illegally-stored explosives, gelatin sticks and trucks loaded with granite in a raid.[7]

In November 2018, Renu was transferred to Devikulam in Idukki district. She is the first woman to hold the position of sub-collector in Devikulam.[8] During the Kerala floods, she coordinated rescue operations and updated the public about the situation. She announced severe restrictions on constructions and a crackdown on encroachments along river banks. Renu directed Munnar tahsildar to prepare the number of illegal buildings in the river banks of Muthirapuzha River.[9] In September 2019, Renu was transferred from her role as Sub-Collector to Secretary in the Public Administration Department.[10]

On 2 June 2020, Renu is appointed as the Director of Urban Affairs.[11][12]
