Respectful Relationships education is an evidence-based primary and secondary school education program used in Australia intended to improve gender equality, rates of both prevalence and disclosures of sexual harassment, sexual abuse and family violence.[1][2][3][4] This is designed to be achieved by educating students in gender inequality, gender identity, emotional literacy, problem solving, stress management and help seeking skills.[1][2][4]

Development[edit]

In Victoria, proposals for the program were studied since at least 2009 by the Victorian department of education.[5] After a successful pilot program conducted on 19 secondary schools in 2015,[6] it became a core component of the Victorian education curriculum in 2016[7] being undertaken by 1,950 Victorian government schools, including Catholic and independent schools, under mandate.[8][9][10] It was in a pilot program in Queensland from 2017 to 2019[11] with a further $15.5 million AUD funding secured for 2022-2023 programs by the Third Palaszczuk Ministry.[12][13][14][15] The education program is also being used in the Australian Capital Territory.[16] It is separated into curriculum stages in a "whole school approach", where every year level in Australian schools from foundation (prep) to year 12 is designed to participate in the curriculum. It also places emphasis on the governance, leadership and professional education of teachers and other educational staff.

Results from pilot programs have suggested the program is effective for reducing the effect of gender stereotypes in primary school students.[17]

Public reception[edit]

A 2016 study found modest, statistically significant reductions of gender stereotyping as a result of the pilot program in Victoria conducted during 2015. A follow up study following the Victorian mandate of the program conducted over 2017-2018 also demonstrated statistically significant reduction in gender stereotyping.[18]

Mandatory state school participation in the program was generally met with support, and the program is anticipated to be extended in some form nationally across Australia.[19][20] However, some parents and teachers have expressed fear towards aspects of the curriculum related to sexuality:

In Queensland, the 2021-2022 program is not compulsory and parents can choose to have their children to be opted out of the program.[19]
