Return of Reckoning is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game that has been created by Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning fans, after that the original game has been completely shut down in 2013. The fan-made project is completely against any donations, any in-game shops and pledges all the work towards the passion behind this game[2].
Return of Reckoning - and Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning - feature unlimited, massive realm vs realm battles at any given time of the day. There are no restrictions to how many enemies or allies that can be present at any given time on the same map or even same keep/location.
Background[edit]
When Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning was shut down back in 2013[3], a Mythic Entertainment developer called Dyox has decided to create their own private server[4]. However, after a few months, he has noticed that he's unable to proceed with his plan as it required a hefty amount of time and effort in order for it to succeed as he envisioned. Dyox has then made the code public and has released his sources.
With all of that rolling with Dyox, a small team of pure Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning fans were already working on creating an emulator. After that Dyox released their sources, that small team took them and added them to their progress. Thus, the creation of WarEmu was born in partnership with Gowonda, a French gaming website which rated and helped with the development of private projects[5].
Return of Reckoning, the Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning private - fan made - server was then created successfully.
Legal Status[edit]
Return of Reckoning falls under a controversial status: A private server that is using another company's Intellectual Properties. However, everything has been explained and one strong proof of how this private server falls under a complete 'grey area' is the fact that it has been running uninterrupted for 7 years[6].
As per Games Workshop's Intellectual Property guidelines, Return of Reckoning falls under the grey area - neither approved nor disapproved by the IP holder - as the private server does not charge and surely not profit from the project[7]. If anything, it is probably draining someone's personal money due to server upkeep, maintenance, service, etc.
The team takes a lot of precautions in order to respect the Games Workshop IP and so far, it has not received any legal threats[8] which is more explained by Natherul, a previous volunteer developer of the Return of Reckoning staff: "We feel that because the game is dead, there is no other Warhammer online MMORPG, we stick to the lore that they provided, and we don't make any money on it, that there is little reason for them to hit us with legal troubles."
Gameplay[edit]
Return of Reckoning mainly focuses on RvR (Realm vs Realm) which purely envelops massive battles and thus is a PvP mode. There are PvE instances but they're very limited and there are surely Scenarios, known in other games as battlegrounds with Ranked Season 2 released earlier in 2021.
