Rhubarb Gin
Rhubarb gin is infused gin which has a fragrance with a sweet and crisp Rhubarb flavour.
History[edit]
The origin of Rhubarb gin is still unclear. However, there are some suspicious stories about it which both claim that it's from Great Britain.
Rhubarb and Gin were both popular in Great Britain during the victorian era, from 1837 to 1901; a period in the first half of the 18th century in Great Britain is even called the Gin Craze because of its rapid increase of gin consumption.
- During the reign of Queen Victoria, the Buckingham Palace had grown rhubarbs in the kitchen garden.[1] About 200 years ago, somehow a group of hand-made gins artisans made gin using a crop of this rhubarb which is now called Warner Edwards Victoria's Rhubarb Gin.[2]
- Another speculation is that one of the notorious murderers, William Palmer (murderer) had used this administered poison to some of his victims using rhubarb gin to mask the taste of the strychnine which had a very bitter taste. It is unclear that William Palmer had used rhubarb gin especially to poison his victims, but there are some evidences William Palmer using rhubarb and gin. He was reported as murdering his victims including his brother, Walter Palmer, by administering poison with a glass of gin.[3][4] The reason him being speculated by using rhubarb gin is because it is he used to grown his own rhubarb in his kitchen garden[5][6], also, the rhubarb powder was found from his cabinet which was fulled with several bottles inside.[7] The museum staff at Tamworth Castel where the cabinet is preserved, warned that use of the Tincture of rhubarb found inside might assist the bowels of whoever took it.[8]
