Rhys William, also known as Mat Salleh Cari Makan is an English video blogger and travel broadcaster who has been living in Malaysia since 2013. He is known for his Malaysian food vlogs in Bahasa Melayu language. He is also known for his TV show Mat Salleh Cari Makan and Cerita Makan Rhys William. He has created many videos which promote Malaysian food.[1]

Background[edit]

William was born in Redhill, United Kingdom[2] and moved to Malaysia in September 2013.[3] He started as a blogger in 2015.[4] He created his first vlog in 2017, reviewing Malaysia's national dish nasi lemak in Kampung Baru.[5]

Since then he worked with Tourism Malaysia to promote Malaysian cuisine, and with Malaysia Airlines to promote their in-flight Malaysian food offers.[6]

During Ramadan 2017 William fasted for the month and documented his journey and experience in a series of vlogs.[7] In 2018 William again fasted for Ramadan and documented his experience and journey of fasting throughout the month in partnership with Muslim Pro Malaysia.[8] He also took part in World Quran Hour to learn more about Islam and the Quran.[9]

William is known not only for his food vlog videos, but also for his comprehension of the Bahasa Melayu dialect.[10] This led to him studying the Jawi Script in 2019,[11] and hosting Astro Gempak’s “Mind Your Jawi” in 2020 and 2021 respectively.[12]

In August 2021 William was hospitalised after he simultaneously contracted Covid-19 and Dengue fever, and also developed pneumonia.[13]
