Rhythm Boyz Entertainment INC, or simply known as Rhythm Boyz is a Punjabi film production and distribution company founded by Karaj Gill and Amrinder Gill in 2013. The company was named after their college time Bhangra group.[2][3] Rhythm Boyz began to produce films in 2014 with Goreyan Nu Daffa Karo. Since 2014, Rhythm Boyz has produced total 13 films till date, out of which 9 are in List of highest-grossing Punjabi films including Angrej, Love Punjab, Bambukat, Vekh Baraatan Challiyan, Lahoriye, Golak Bugni Bank Te Batua, Ashke and Chal Mera Putt.[4][5] At Filmfare Awards Punjabi all the top three award-winning films are produced by Rhythm Boyz Entertainment.[6]

Films produced by Rhythm Boyz are based on the culture of Punjab or revolve around the issues of Punjab. Angrej was based on love in Punjab of 1940s.[7] Lahoriye was based on love across the border between people of two different Punjabs[8] whereas Ashke was based on Punjabi folk dance Bhangra which released with a new experiment of releasing trailer just some hours before of release.[9] In 2019, Rhythm Boyz collaborated with Pakistani artists in Chal Mera Putt, which was based on the Punjabis trying hard to make living in foreign countries. Also, the film became highest-grossing Punjabi film at overseas. Its sequel Chal Mera Putt 2 was released in 2020.

History[edit]

Khalsa College, Amritsar is also seen in motion logo of Rhythm Boyz as it is the origin of the company

From the school days to Khalsa College, Amritsar Amrinder Gill and Karaj Gill were in same Bhangra team.[10] And Amrinder in his first recording for program Kala Doria on Doordarshan decided to give singing credits to their group instead of their names and the group was named as Rhythm Boyz.[11][3] In an interview Gill revealed the reason to found company, said, “We make films with such passion but they fail to reach the audience because of poor marketing and distribution. So we decided why not turn producers and have the freedom to produce and market our own films.”[3]

On 19 March 2013, the company was registered at British Columbia, Canada. In 2014, Judaa 2 album sung by Amrinder Gill was released by Rhythm Boyz.[12] Later in 2015, Rhythm Boyz released their first film Angrej in association with Dara Productions and J Studios. The film was based on love in Punjab of 1940s. The film grossed ₹30 crore in its theatrical run and became one of the highest-grossing film of all time. The film ran over fifty days in India and overseas.[13] The film settled the trend following couple of period films releasing every year. The film won ten awards at PTC Punjabi Film Awards including Best Film, Best Director (Simerjit Singh), Best Actor (Gill), and Best Actress (Sargun Mehta).[14]
