Richard Hurowitz is an American writer, investor, and businessman. He is the CEO of Octavian and Company, a global investment firm. He is the founder and publisher of the Octavian Report, a quarterly magazine covering economics, politics, and culture, and the founder of Octavian Advisors, an investment fund sold to private equity firm TPG Capital in 2013.[1]

Hurowitz received a bachelor's degree in history from Yale University in 1995, magna cum laude, and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He graduated from Columbia University Law School in 1998 and was a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar.
Career[edit]
Hurowitz is the chief executive officer of Octavian & Company, a boutique global investment firm that focuses on proprietary private equity transactions.[2] In 2020, as CEO he oversaw the launch of an investment vehicle backed by a consortium of family offices that invests alongside private equity funds on a deal-by-deal basis.[3] Hurowitz founded investment fund Octavian Advisors in 2006, where he served as chief investment officer.[4] Before being sold to private equity firm TPG in 2013,[5] Octavian Advisors managed over $1 billion in assets[6][7] and specialized in international special situations.[8][4] The fund held stakes in Head NV, Moncler, EI Towers,[9] EnerCare,[10] Atlas Arteria, and Midwest Airlines.[11]
Prior to founding Octavian, Hurowitz was a partner and managing principal at Halcyon Asset Management LLC, a multi-strategy hedge fund.[12]
Hurowitz has served on the board of directors of EI Towers SpA and HEAD NV,[13][14] and is a trustee of the Yale University Art Gallery.[15] He is a member of the Bretton Woods Committee[16] and the Council on Foreign Relations.[17] He serves on the Advisory Council for Justice for Kurds.[18]
In 2014, Hurowitz founded The Octavian Report, a quarterly digital and print magazine that features intelligence, information and insights from world leaders and experts in economics, geopolitics, and the arts.[19]
In 2017, Hurowitz co-founded the Renew Democracy Initiative, a non-partisan, not-for-profit organization promoting and defending liberal democracy. He served as the organization’s president.[20]
Hurowitz has published articles and opinion pieces about history and current events. His work has appeared in the Wall Street Journal,[21] Financial Times,[22] New York Times,[23] Los Angeles Times,[24] The Daily Beast,[25] USA Today,[26] The Times,[27] History Today[28] and Time.[29] He contributed an essay about free trade to the book Fight for Liberty: Defending Democracy in the Age of Trump.[30]
Personal life[edit]
Hurowitz grew up in New York City and attended the Dalton School. Hurowitz married Sharon Coplan in 1999.[31] Coplan Hurowitz is an independent curator and art adviser. They have two children.
Hurowitz was a member of the 2019 United States masters table tennis team at the European Maccabi Games in Budapest.[32]
