Riiid is an artificial intelligence education company founded in 2014.[1][2] The company is based in Seoul, Korea, with a subsidiary, Riiid Labs, in Silicon Valley, California.[3]

Riiid is one of a number of companies commercializing intelligent tutoring systems based on deep learning.[4] These systems use machine-learning algorithms, such as recommender systems, which are more commonly used by companies like Amazon or Netflix to recommend content to users based on those users' viewing or purchasing history. In Riiid's case, the algorithm is used to recommend educational content to students based on those students' interaction with Riiid's system.

In addition to the recommender system, Riiid uses Bayesian Knowledge Tracing to track student progress and a score prediction algorithm to perform continuous assessment of students in real time.

Riiid launched a mobile application, Santa for TOEIC[5], in August 2017 to help students prepare for the Test of English for International Communication, which is widely used in Asia to assess English language proficiency.

Riiid has raised over $248 million from SoftBank Vision Fund[3][6], Korea Development Bank, NVESTOR, Intervest, and IMM Investment.[7]

In 2020, the company publicly released EdNet[8], a dataset of more than 131 million student interactions with 784,309 individual students from Santa for TOEIC.[9][10][11]

Later that year, company launched a competition on Google's Kaggle platform to improve knowledge tracing algorithms using the EdNet dataset.[12][13] The challenge had a $100,000 prize pool.[14] Chief advisor to the challenge was Paul Kim. The competition was won by SeungKee Jeon, a Kaggle Competition Grandmaster and Deep Learning Engineer at Samsung Electronics.[15][16]

Product[edit]

Riiid has struggled to generalize its product due to the difficulty in collecting data from students outside Korea. It has developed a system called RIIID Tutor[17], available as a content-agnostic platform and its technology is also available through an application programming interface for integration into other platforms. But lack of training data for different subjects and regions has hampered sales.

Like Santa for TOEIC, RIIID Tutor works as a personal tutor using a set of algorithms that track student performance, predict student scores, recommend content and anticipate when students are losing interest and about to drop out.[18][19][20][21]

In January 2023, the company will launch an SAT and ACT test prep product in the United States.
