The Roma (Gypsy) population in Sweden is estimated to be between 50,000 and 100,000 individuals. More than twenty dialects of the Romani language are spoken in Sweden.[citation needed] The Roma first arrived in Sweden more than 500 years ago.[1] Romani people were declared a Swedish national minority in 1999.[2] Romani people are one of five officially recognized minorities in Sweden, with the Romani language officially recognised as a minority language in Sweden. Despite this official recognition, Romani people represent one of the most marginalized communities in Sweden.[3]

History[edit]

The first Roma presence in Sweden was 1512 when thirty Romani families arrived in Stockholm from Helsinki, Finland.[2]

Discrimination[edit]

Discrimination against the Roma in Sweden dates back to the 16th century.[4]

In Sweden, 60,000 Roma women were forcibly sterilized in 1935-1976.[5]
