S7 Airlines Flight 5220 was a regularly scheduled S7 Airlines passenger flight from Magadan to Novosibirsk. On 2 December 2001, an Airbus A321neo operating the flight, registration VQ-BGU was pitching down soon after takeoff, and was forced to make and emergency landing in Irkutsk. The incident happened due to icing. All 204 people on board survived.[1][2]
Aircraft and crew[edit]
The aircraft was Airbus A321neo, registered VQ-BGU, with serial number 8620[3]. It made its first flight on 17 December 2018, and was delivered to S7 Airlines on 24 December 2018. At the time of the incident, the aircraft had been in service for only almost 1 year. It was fitted with two Pratt & Whitney PW1000G engines.[4]
The captain of the S7 flight 5220 was M. Kulagin. The first officer was O. Balabanov.
Incident[edit]
When the S7 flight 5220 was taking off from Magadan, there were 204 people on board, 199 passengers and 5 crew. Soon after takeoff, the crew noticed that the ice wasn't fully deleted. The pitot system rejected, and the plane started lurching and losing altitude.[5] In 10 seconds the Airbus A321 lost around 8860 feet (2700 metres).[6][7]. The pilots could stabilise the plane over Yakutia and decided to make an emergency landing in Irkutsk.[8]
The crew was suspended from piloting until the end of investigation.[9]
Investigation[edit]
Federal Air Transport Agency (FATA) investigated the incident happened with the S7 flight 5220.
On 24 December 2021 the Final Investigation Report was published. The following reasons were given:
- The snow wasn't removed from the nose part of the fuselage
- The captain used the sidestick too actively, what led to a stall
- The following mistakes were done by the ground staff:
- Deicing was made when it was snowing. The Aircraft Deicing Fluid had not enough time.
- There was used only 99 litres of Deicing Fluid, while it is recommended to use 230 litres for Airbus A321neo
- The Deicing Fluid was not viscous enough. Lack of viscosity increases the chance of icing
