History

Daniele Conti and Luciano Secciani
Daniele Conti and Luciano Secciani

SECO was founded in 1979 in Arezzo, Italy, by Luciano Secciani and Daniele Conti.[1][2] The company name is composed of the first two letters of each founder's surname. At that time, the focus was on ignition kits for cars. In addition, they developed equipment for manufacturers in the goldsmith industry, including generators for galvanic strips and piece counters used in gold and silver assembly. In 1980, they positioned themselves in the electronics sector and expanded their product range with the development of their first computer. In 1999, they introduced the first all-in-one touch PC, followed by the creation of the CUBIT platform, which is based on intelligent data networking. In 2008, the company collaborated with Congatec and MSC to develop the Qseven standard module, which is now used worldwide. In 2012, SECO was one of the founding members of SGET (Standardization Group for Embedded Technologies).[3] This was followed by a process of internationalization with the opening of new SECO Group offices in Germany, the USA, India, and Taiwan. In 2013, SECO developed the open-source single-board computer UDOO in collaboration with the start-up AiDiLAB. This hardware solution is adaptable and can be further developed to support various systems.[4]

Internationalization

In 2018, SECO underwent restructuring, including the acquisition of Fannal Electronics, a Chinese company specializing in human-machine interface (HMI) technologies.[5] This was followed by the acquisition of InHand Electronics, an American company specializing in customized embedded hardware and software for IoT applications.[6] In 2019, SECO celebrated its 40th anniversary and opened its new headquarters in Arezzo. This was followed by acquisitions focusing on the areas of artificial intelligence, IoT and big data.[7] In May 2021, SECO was listed on the Italian stock exchange in the star segment under the ticker symbol IOT.MI. This was followed by the acquisition of the Garz & Fricke Group in October 2021. This resulted in the creation of SECO Northern Europe GmbH, based in Hamburg and Wuppertal.
