History[edit]
The Safe Space Alliance began in 2019 as a project developed by artist and activist Shannon Novak at The Suter Art Gallery in Nelson, New Zealand.[1] It involved the installation of a full circle rainbow on the windows of the gallery to help people identify the gallery as a safe space for the LGBTQI+ community.[2] The idea then spread to the surrounding community in Nelson including Nelson City Council who became a safe space, then funded a light art project that projected the Safe Space Alliance logo onto buildings around Nelson.[3] Novak then formalised the Safe Space Alliance into a nonprofit organisation that extended its scope to other cities in New Zealand with the help of Auckland’s Britomart Group.[4] The Safe Space Alliance then became an international organisation.[5] Novak sees the Safe Space Alliance as an artwork creating social change for the LGBTQI+ community worldwide.[6]
Definition[edit]
The Safe Space Alliance defines safe space as space that welcomes and supports the LGBTQI+ community.[7]
Space types[edit]
The Safe Space Alliance welcomes spaces regardless of size, location, and category/industry.[8][9][10] The Safe Space Alliance identifies three types of safe space:
- Physical: a space with a street address.
- Mobile: a space that moves around (e.g. a taxi).
- Digital: a digital and/or online space.
Registering a space[edit]
The public may apply to have a space registered as a safe space through the Safe Space Alliance website.
