Saisha Shinde is the first transwoman celebrity fashion designer from India. Saisha Shinde had the honor of designing the gown worn by Harnaaz Sandhu, who represented India at the 70th edition of Miss Universe.[1][2]

Early life[edit]

Shinde was born as a male child named 'Swapnil Shinde'.[3] In January 2021, the designer publicly revealed her identity as a transwoman and adopted the name Saisha Shinde.[4]

She received her fashion education from National Institute of Fashion Technology.[5]

LGBT rights in India[edit]

While progress has been made, the state of LGBT acceptance in India still faces significant challenges. Shinde, too, encountered difficulties during her childhood due to bullying and discrimination.[6] Saisha courageously shared her transformation journey and the challenges she faced during her first television appearance.[7] Shinde recounted numerous incidents of discrimination she faced as a result of her gender identity. One notable instance occurred when she declined to donate blood.[8]

The public declaration of Saisha as a transwoman marked a profoundly significant moment, not only in her own life but also in the lives of numerous LGBTQIA+individuals in India.[6] Saisha emphasizes that brands often engage in superficial representation by promoting trans visibility as a mere gesture, primarily during designated periods of celebration, while disregarding the community for the remainder of the year.[9]

"The fact that a trans model walking the ramp is considered 'ground-breaking' is the problem. Talent should have no gender. Fashion labels and brands shouldn't use trans models to highlight the 'queerness of their brands', but include them in regular campaigns and make them part of the normal." Saisha Shinde

BBC News

Saisha aspires to contribute significantly to the betterment of the trans community, serving as a profound source of inspiration for numerous individuals who resonate with her journey.[6]

Career[edit]

As a fashion designer[edit]

Shinde created dresses for several Indian celebrity actresses. She has served as a fashion designer for multiple Hindi films, notably for Kangana Ranaut and Priyanka Chopra in the movie "Fashion" (2008). Additionally, she has designed costumes for Bollywood films such as "Guzaarish" (2010) and "Laxmii" (2020). Shinde's skills and experience have made her a sought-after designer among Bollywood celebrities such as Shraddha Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor, Anushka Sharma,[3][10] Deepika Padukone, Katrina Kaif, Sunny Leone, Tara Sutaria, Taapsee Pannu, Bhumi Pednekar, and Hina Khan.[11]

Reality Show[edit]

In 2022, Shinde participated in the Indian reality show "Lock Upp" for its first season.[12] During the show, she courageously opened up about her personal life, revealing that she had endured significant mental abuse in a past relationship.[13] In addition, she had the opportunity to participate in the American TV show 'Project Runway' during its 14th season in 2015.[14][15]
