Sakuta Azusagawa (梓川 咲太, Azusagawa Sakuta) is the main male character in the light novel, anime and manga series Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai.

Personal status[edit]

Sakuta was born on April 10th and is about 17 years old. He lives with his younger sister Kaede and has been taking care of her. Their parents left them because their father had to take care of their mother who could not come in acceptance of Kaede's case of Adolescence Syndrome.

Appearance[edit]

Sakuta is a boy of average height, with light brown hair and overall good-looking despite his somewhat dull eyes. He has three large scars on his chest which he states is due to Adolescence Syndrome.

Personality[edit]

Sakuta has a characteristic deadpan face. His nonchalant manner of speech, regardless of his emotional state, reflect his very bluff and sarcastic personality. He normally says what's on his mind with a stoic demeanor. Sakuta is a socially-isolated, calm, and serious guy, largely due to his dealing with Adolescence Syndrome. He's very smart and intuitive, and is very good at reading between the lines. He says he's not bothered by what people think about him and doesn't care about trying to fit in and be accepted by his classmates. The rumors surrounding his hospitalization earned him his reputation as a bad guy. Sakuta had stated clearly to Mai that he doesn't care if the whole world hates him as long as there is one person who needs him. He isn't hesitant about defining social norms. Despite his anti-social behavior, he's a very kind-hearted, selfless, caring and compassionate guy who jumps headfirst for anyone he cares about. He especially tries to help those who suffer from bullying or the Adolescence Syndrome, as he is reminded of his sister and himself. Sakuta is also not afraid to show his lecherous side and often makes lewd remarks to the girls he interacts with bluntly. However, these comments are mostly jokes and by no means ill-intended.

Plot[edit]

Sakuta's very first encounter with Adolescence Syndrome was when it occurred to his sister Kaede. She had been a victim of bullying and online harassment, which had manifested itself in the form of spontaneous physical cuts in her skin. Kaede had also lost her memories. Following the series of events, one morning Sakuta's chest began bleeding to the point where he had to be hospitalized. After the hospitalization and in his helplessness, he went to Shichirigahama Beach, where he met a girl named Shoko Makinohara and told her his story. Strangely, she chose to believe it without any questioning. When asked why, Shoko simply replied that she wanted to spend her life being kinder than before. Moved, Sakuta asked if he could live like she did, and she agreed. Sakuta gifted Kaede a pen and notebook, saying that they would write her name in hiragana, referring to her as the current Kaede. As a way to sympathize with Kaede and to prevent further injuries, Sakuta threw his phone in the ocean. His hospitalization started the false rumor that Sakuta had engaged in violent activities and had sent people to the hospital. This is subsequently referred to as the "Hospitalization Incident" and everyone started keeping their distance after rumors began to spread about it. Those who only chose to believe him were his close friends, Yūma Kunimi and Rio Futaba, bringing them closer than ever and much to the chagrin of Kunimi's girlfriend who threatened Sakuta not to compromise Kunimi's reputation and keep his distance.

Mai Sakurajima was the first girl after his sister whose suffered from the Adolescence Syndrome. Sakuta tried to find the root of the problem which took them across to many places. They travelled together and Sakuta discovered parts of her life unknown to the public eye. He came to know what actually caused her to become invisible and amongst all the chaos, they began to come closer together and Mai discovered several of Sakuta's good traits. After the Adolescence Syndrome had long subsided and she became visible again, she finally agreed to go out with him albeit after a lot of confession attempts by Sakuta. In the end of the anime, Sakuta takes Kaede to the hospital. Her Adolescence Syndrome and hikikomori problem is solved and her normal personality is restored. In the movie, Shoko Makinohara reveals Sakuta has his scars because of a supernatural event which involves her. The Shoko in the current timeline has a heart disease, and the older Shoko is her future self who was saved because Sakuta became his heart donor after dying due to a car running him over. Mai, after hearing the conversation, plans to sacrifice herself and become Shoko's heart donor. When she's killed in the car accident to save Sakuta, he turns to despair and hopelessly attempts to save her. He finally convinces her that he'll find another way to save Shoko without sacrificing either of their lives. However, this meant that all the events that had occurred until then would change accordingly, risking their relationships and the love they had found in each-other. Nevertheless, Mai and Sakuta vow to find each other and fall in love all over again.
