Salem Central Prison is located in Hastampatti, Salem district, India and is authorized to accommodate [1]. This is also one of the oldest prisons, built in 1862. An annex jail was also built in 1934. Salem Central Jail has the capacity to handle 1431 in-house prisoners and has an area of about 113.19 acres (0.4581 km2) .
The jail is designed in a circular shape with a centripetal arrangement, as all the cells centre towards a point.
