Salem Kapsaski (also known as '''Selena Kapsaki''') (born October 7, 1986 in Freudenstadt.[1]) is a German-Greek writer, film director, actor and producer best known for directing Spidarlings (2016)[2][3][4][5][6].

Early life[edit]

Kapsaski was born in Freudenstadt, Germany to film producer Andrea Gabriella Kapsaski and German writer Dieter Straub. Kapsaski grew up in Athens, Greece. Kapsaski's grandfather was the Greek writer and director Socrates Kapsaskis. Kapsaski studied at the Athens Conservatory of Music, as well as film production at the New York Film Academy in Athens. Kapsaski later studied Sound Engineering at the City of Westminster College in London, England [7]. In 2005 Kapsaski joined the international theater company Act Provocateur International with Andy McQuade and Victor Sobchak. Kapsasko worked and toured with Act Provocateur International for several years as a stage director, light designer, stage manager and sometimes actor. In 2006 Kapsaski played the role of serial killer Ian Brady in a stage adaptation of Rainer Werner Fassbinder's play Pre-Paradise Sorry Now at the Lion & Unicorn Theatre [8][9].

Career[edit]

Salem Kapsaski is a film director, producer, and screenwriter of low budget independent feature films. Kapsaski directed the short film My Head Hurts in 2000 at the age of 14, the film premiered at the Horror & Sci-Fi Film Fest in Stuttgart [10]. In 2009, Rafael Primorac engaged Kapsaski as a production assistant for Dario Argento's film Giallo [11]. From 2015-2017 Kapsaski was the director and producer of the US talk show London Calling hosted by Jeff Kristian[12]. Kapsaski became known as a director for the queercore horror musical Spidarlings (2016) released by Troma Entertainment[13][14]. The film received mixed reviews but has since gained a cult following [15][16][17][18]. It has been dubbed "One of the most celebrated Troma titles of the last years" [19]. Kapsaski also directed several music videos and short films, Including Laganja's Dance School (2019) a short documentary about American choreographer, drag queen and RuPaul's Drag Race contestant Laganja Estranja [20][21].

As a musician Kapsaski played in various Punk bands, including Chicken Pest, The Astyanax and Contra of the Unformed as well as briefly working with German Noise band Swingjugend [22]. Kapsaski co-founded the now disbanded art collective C.3.3. with Scott Barley and Jesse Richards [23] and is the co-founder and artistic director of Après Vague Productions. As a freelance writer, Kapsaski has contributed to magazines such as Weng's Chop, Art Decades, Mass Movement Magazine, and Scene4 Magazine. In 2015 Kapsaski's novel Nazi Sniper was released [24][25][26][27].

Personal life[edit]

Kapsaski is an ordained minister with the Universal Life Church (or ULC). Since 2011 Kapsaski lives in Manchester. Sibling of actress Rahel Kapsaski[28].
