Sally the Zombie Cheerleader is an American horror host of cult and classic B-movies on cable TV, public access television, and the internet, independently producing and starring in two series, The Zombie Cheerleader's School of Horror.[1] and The Zombie Cheerleader Show[2].

In addition to performing in her own series, she also appears as a guest at live events and conventions, as a guest star with other horror hosts on their shows, has written two books, and appears in a range of collectible merchandise. She's a multiple-Rondo Award nominee, and in 2020 she was inducted into the Horror Host Hall of Fame[3].

The Zombie Cheerleader's School of Horror and The Zombie Cheerleader Show[edit]

The opening narration from The Zombie Cheerleader's School of Horror establishes the premise:

Many years ago humans called "scientists" developed a nasty little chemical formula that was supposed to kill weeds. Unfortunately, unbeknownst to the scientists, the chemical had one small side effect: reanimation of the dearly-departed. After a local caretaker used a sample in a graveyard, the first zombies were created. Then, after an explosion, many more zombies appeared. Soon afterards, I was bitten, then I, too, became a zombie: the Zombie Cheerleader. I found a home in an abandoned school. There I found movies about zombies, monsters, and how fleshies try to fight us. I then decided we needed to fight back. Welcome to the Zombie Cheerleader's School of Horror.

From Sally's lair, she and a cast of supporting characters present the movies in a classroom setting to discuss them and related subjects according to a lesson plan Sally outlines before the movie begins, including movie goofs to watch out for, and trivia about the movie and its production (which also sometimes pops up onscreen during the movie itself, similar to VH1's Pop-Up Video).

The movies are also often used as platforms to instruct viewers about broader "fleshie" (her term for living humans) culture and history, and in her holiday specials, the background behind the holiday being observed. This all usually leads to hijinks like Sally's lair being overrun by zombie cats, or Sally struggling with tech support for her "Hell" computer.

In classic horror host format, these scripted host segments and sketches bookend the film and appear intermittently throughout, and occasionally include inserts of Sally herself into the movie. Also shown during the movies are curated clips from other media, like vintage commercials.

In 2009, Sally premiered The Zombie Cheerleader Show, which adopted more of a television magazine format in which she went on location to places of interest and horror conventions. A reboot of The Zombie Cheerleader's School of Horror was launched in 2022, returning to the original format.

In addition to The Zombie Cheerleader's School of Horror and The Zombie Cheerleader Show, Sally also produces shorts and promos, both original and adapted from full-length episodes. These are published on her official YouTube channel[4].

Characters[edit]

Name Played By Personality
Sally Nicole M. (Brooks) King Sally is an unusually bright and curious zombie, fascinated by living humans (whom she calls "fleshies") and their culture, apparently not remembering ever being one herself. She's deliberate in the language she uses when she talks about humans, careful to try to avoid stating outright that she likes to eat them. She acts as something of a pro-monster activist, sometimes bemoaning the unfairness with which they're treated.

Her appearance is in monochrome black and white, in a "Zombie U" cheerleader uniform, with skull-topped ponytails, fishnet stockings, and black Chuck Taylor All-Stars sneakers, suggesting she might have originally been "turned" sometime in the mid-20th century.

Zombette Genevieve Brooks Zombette is Sally's assistant, whom Sally dug up from a local cemetery. She's more of a feral zombie than Sally, communicating mostly in hisses.
Maggot Stew (Nicole M. Brooks) King

Maggot Stew is a bubbly zombie gourmet with a cooking show, where she prepares dishes that would appeal to zombies and other monsters.

Mr. Hairyhand Dan Fink (2005-2009)

Robert King (2022-)

Mr. Hairyhand is a monstrous hand that appears sometimes out of a box on Sally's desk, or reaching in from out-of-frame, alternately assisting her and creating mischief, like a more mischievous (and hairier) Thing from The Addams Family.

SkeleKat "An Unknown Demonic Force" SkeleKat is Sally's smart and sarcastic plush sidekick who speaks in meows, which sometimes get translated for viewers with speech bubbles.
Slo Frank Christopher Inlow Slo Frank is a classic Frankenstein's Monster, though more friendly and cheerful than most. He's sometimes called on by Sally to help host the show, but usually just ends up creating chaos and disrupting Sally's plans.
My Zombie and Arabelle "Nicole M. (Brooks) King" My Zombie and Arabelle are sibling possessed dolls whose father (who wishes to remain anonymous) sent them to Sally's school to learn all about "fleshies" in order to one day rule the world. They inhabit a previously undiscovered hellscape in Sally's lair.

Other Work[edit]

Sally often collaborates with other horror hosts, appearing on Creature Feature with Count Gore de Vol (her favorite host growing up[5]), Cinema Insomnia with Mr. Lobo, Monster Madhouse Live with Karlos Borloff, and Monster Movie Night with Bobby Gammonster[6], as well as appearing in the 2006 horror host documentary, American Scary[7]. She also co-wrote the book, The Memoirs of Doctor Creep, with Dr. Creep himself, Barry Hobart[8], and appeared on Penny Dreadful's Dark Shadows podcast, Terror at Collinwood[9]

Sally also wrote The Zombie Cheerleader's Big Book of Brains[10], and was featured in Jonathan Maberry's book, Zombie CSU: The Forensics of the Living Dead[11]. Sally has collaborated with artist Rob Fleck of Phoenix Comics and Toys[12] on Sally the Zombie Cheerleader collectibles, including trading cards, figurines, a plush Sally "tear apart" doll, and replicas of Sally's hair accessories.

Live Appearances[edit]

Sally is a frequent attendee at conventions, particularly Cinema Wasteland in Cleveland, Ohio[13][14]. She's also appeared at live events such as fellow horror host Count Gore de Vol's 50th Anniversary celebration in Silver Spring, Maryland, and Mr. Lobo's Pop-Up Drive-In events in Paradise, Pennsylvania[15]. Her event schedule can be found on her official website[16].
