Sameer Ahmed Bhat better known as Sameer Tiger was a militant operating within Kashmir, India, was serving as commander of Hizbul Mujahideen.[3][4] He along with another militant named Aaqib Ahmad Khan from Rajpora Pulwama were killed in Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir by security forces on 30 April 2018.[5][6]
Early life[edit]
Sameer Bhat joined the militant group Hizbul Mujahideen on 7 May 2016; he was considered an A++ category terrorist by Indian authorities[7][2] and there was a reward of ₹1,000,000 (US$14,000) for his capture.[8]
Bhat was recruited to Hizbul Mujahideen after he discontinued his schooling. He participated in several stone-throwing incidents prior to his terrorist activities,[6] and was involved in the firing incident on the residence of Syed Bashir Ahmad, a Member of Legislative Assembly in Sheikhard, as well as a grenade attack on the Naka Party in Pulwama.[9] Bhat was considered a poster boy for the Hizbul Mujahideen after the death of Burhan Muzaffar Wani in July 2016.[10] Bhat received media attention in 2017 after a picture was published of him posing with an M4 carbine on social media.[11][2] He was arrested for stone pelting on Indian Armed Forces in Jammu and Kashmir on 24 March 2016, but was released five days later.[12]
Death[edit]
On 30 April 2018, Bhat was killed in an encounter by a joint team of the Jammu and Kashmir Police, Indian Army and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), headed by Major Rohit Shukla.[6] His funeral on 1 May was attended by thousands of people including women and children.[13] An armed party made a gun salute, reported Times Now,[14][15][8] and three days later, thousands of people visited Tiger's residence in Drubgam village to express solidarity and offer condolences, reported Greater Kashmir.[16]
Aftermath[edit]
The day after Tiger died, government forces launched a cordon and search operation (CASO) in the area.[17] For their part, the Joint Resistance Leadership—comprising Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Muhammad Yasin—expressed deep sorrow and anger over the killing of militants and called for a general strike across Kashmir on 1 May.[18]
The grave of Sameer was vandalized in May 2018. The incident erupted massive protest in Drabgam area of Pulwama and started stone pelting on the Army camp in Shadimarg, Pulwama on 30 May 2018.[19] Protesters blamed the security forces for vandalizing the grave.[20]
