Samuel Charlton

Samuel G. Charlton is a New Zealand Psychology academic. He is currently a Professor at the University of Waikato[1].

Academic Career[edit]

Charlton received his PhD in Experimental Psychology from the University of New Mexico. Following that, he held positions at the University of Albuquerque, the Veterans Administration Medical Center in New Mexico, the BDM Corporation, and the US Air Force Operational Test & Evaluation Center before moving to New Zealand to take up a position at the University of Waikato in 1995[1][2].

Charlton’s expertise is in areas of cognitive psychology, transport, attention, memory, and skilled performance. His research interests include a range of topics related to applied cognitive psychology including everyday memory, information representation, and skilled performance in domains such as transportation and design. His current projects are in the area of driver behaviour including driver attention, perception, & performance[1]. Charlton works closely with Waka Kotahi on this research, some of which led to the lowering of breath and blood alcohol limits for drivers[3][4].

Charlton was awarded a Exemplary Civilian Service Medal from the USAF for his work on the development of the Global Positioning System and also received the Federal Employee of the Year award [needs sources].
