Satin Jackets was created by Tim Bernhardt, a German electronic music producer. His productions are generally related to the Nu-disco and Deep house genres. Satin Jacket's success began in 2013 with the single You Make Me Feel Good.
History[edit]
Tim Bernhardt's musical career began in the late 1990s.[1] under various pseudonyms and in bands such as Headphonism, and Metrosoul[2]. His first success came with the band Lorenzo, founded with Joachim Schäfer in Dortmund, and later joined by Linda Mathews[3]. The style of the band was Deep house and Minimal techno[4]. The band separated in 2006.
Tim Bernhardt returned in 2011 with Satin Jackets. The project has been intended as a way to explore his attraction to disco and his admiration for artists such as Nile Rodgers from the group Chic or Trevor Horn[5]. His music production takes place in his studio, located in a sparsely populated forest in Germany.[5]
The first singles produced under the name Satin Jackets, in particular You Make Me Feel Good in 2013, were noticed and picked up by Majestic Casual, Clash Magazine and Hype Machine, reaching over 10 million listeners on Spotify[6]. The productions are more oriented towards Balearic House and Chill-out. iD describes this music as "super sexy, irresistible house with a summery atmosphere."[7]
In 2016, the album Panorama Pacifico was released, reworking his previous hits and dubbing them with voices from Scavenger Hunt, NTEIBINT, and Marble Sounds among others. At that point Satin jackets became a major figure in the Nu-disco genre[8], totaling to date more than 50 million listenings on streaming platforms[5].
In 2019, he released a second album Solar Nights. This includes collaborations with Panama, David Harks, Niya Wells, Emma Brammer, and Anduze. Tim Bernhardt described it as a further development of his style: "Satin Jackets, but in 3D"[9]
At the same time, the act runSQ was founded together with the duo Blank & Jones.
Tim Bernhardt indicated that he has retired to a studio in the middle of a German forest in order to compose.[5]. He uses Ableton[6] on an iMac, and various filters and dynamic processors such as Elysia or SPL connected to a mixing desk[10]. For his sets, he uses Maschine[10]
On stage, a characteristic mask is worn, designed by Australian designer Jason Wood, who also produces the visuals for the Eskimo Recordings label.[10]. This choice is an indication of a wish for anonymity, even during his own performances[6]
