HSH Prince Sayyid Mir Muhammad Jan (1900-1955) was an Afghan Statesman, serving as General of the Royal Afghan Armed Forces and Statesman and Financial Magistrate at the Royal Afghan Palace (Arg-i-Shahi).

He is the patrairch of the Mir Muhammad Kan Khel (Dakik) sub-cadet branch of the Afghan Barakzai Royal Family, that ruled Afghanistan until the Soviet Revolution and invasion in 1978/79.

Early life and Education[edit]

The Prince was the second son of the Minister of Justice of the Emirate of Afghanistan HSH Prince Sayyid Mir Fazlullah Agha. He studied at his father´s Madrassa, the Hawzae Naqshbandiyya the following subjects:

  • Islamic Political Science and Jurispudence (Qadha wa Siyasa)
  • Islamic Law (Fiqh)
  • Mantiq wa Tasawuf (Logics and Worship)

After graduating with the Ijaza Ilmiyah, having the right to perform Ijtihad, he joined the Afghan Royal Armed Forces, becoming a General. After serving as a General he switched to the Arg-i-Shahi to serve as a Financial Magistrate and advised the Government in questions of military logistics.

Relationship with the Royal Family[edit]

The Prince had close ties to the Muhammadzai Dynasty that ruled Afghanistan until 1978. In fact he was himself accredited as a Tribal Prince (Emir) of Prophet Muhammad´s descendants and acted as a mentor and guide for various Afghan Muhammadzai Royals, including his son in law HRH Prince Abdul Khaliq Kham Telai Barakzai, father of Afghan Physics and Meteorology. He gave his daughter Sayyida Rahima in marriage to Prince Abdul Khaliq Khan Telai Barakzai, blessing their descendants with a special theocratic and aristocratic status.

Sayyid Mir Muhammad Jan first polygamically married 4 wives and is father to Jurists, Diplomats, Academics and international business magnates. Through the initiative of his grandson H.H. Sayyid Sultan Masood Dakik the family of Sayyid Mir Muhammad Jan are widely known in Elitarian high-class networks of royal families as representatives of Prophet Muhammad's family.[1][2]

Legacy[edit]

Sayyid Muhammad Jan was the Supreme Mir and Vice-Imam of his time according to the Sayyid ul Sadatiyya line of Imamate. He and his ancestors emphasized asceticism manifested in Social Actions, like Charity, help of relatives and friends and discipline in one's career. The career should in his view be a "contribution and sacrifice to the Empire of Prophet Muhammad". He hence defined a balance between a life in public and spiritual seclusion as his ancestors taught him in a chain of Qutbs from father to son. [3][4][5]
