Naqeeb ul-Ashraf Sayyed Hashim Al-Gaylani (born in Baghdad, Iraq on the 14th of December 1973) is a Sufi Saint from the progeny of Sheikh Abdul Qadir Gilani, founder of the Qadiri Order.[1] He is the current custodian of the Mausoleum of his ancestor Sheikh Abdulqadir Gilani.[2]

Background and education[edit]

Shaykh Hashim Al-Gaylani belongs to the Gaylani family, a distinguished family of the descendants of Prophet Muhammad that are known as the descendants of Sheikh Abdul Qadir Gilani.[2] Sheikh Abdul qadir Gilani was the founder of the Qadiri Sufi Order and is venerated as the "Sultan ul Awliya", meaning the King of the Saints.[3] The Custodianship was taken over by Abdul-Aziz Al Gaylani, son of Sheikh Abdul Qadir Al-Gaylani and given from father to son until it had reached Sayyid Abdul-Rahman Gaylani.[4] Sayyid Abdul-Rahman Al Gaylani was the first prime minister of Iraq after the fall of the Ottoman Empire and the contemporary Naqib ul-Ashraf of Iraq.[5] As Naqib al-Ashraf he was the supervisor of the descendants of Prophet Muhammad in Iraq.[6]

Sheikh Hashim ul-din is a paternal great-grandson of the first prime minister and founder of the new established Iraqi state and its Naqib ul Ashraf Sheikh Abdul-Rahman Al Gaylani.[1] He was educated in Baghdad and received higher education in the Madrasa Qadiriyya, where he has studied under his teacher Sharif Abdul-Karim Mudarres. He has specialized in islamic law and Tasawuf and received his Ijaza Ilmiyya, which is the highest scholarly degree, from him. He has besides also studied Economics.[1]

Custodianship over the Grand Mosque[edit]

After the demise of his father Sheikh Abdul Qadir Mansor ul-Din Gaylani in year 2011 he has with senior family members taken over the responsibility of custodianship of the grand mosque of his ancestor Sheikh Abdul Qadir Gilani in Baghdad and of preaching the Qadiri Sufi Way around the would.[1] His bases in which he preaches the Qadiri way are predominantly in the United Kingdom, the United States, South Africa, India and Pakistan.[7] He puts his main emphasis in his teachings not only on the veneration of his ancestor Sheikh Abdul Qadir Gaylani but in the preaching of orthodox Sunni Islam, with a main focus on the original traditions of Prophet Muhammad.[8] He is thus venerated himself by many followers.[7]

Because of his influence and popularity as representative of the Qadiri Sufi order is regarded as the present de facto Naqib ul-Ashraf, meaning the head of the descendants of Prophet Muhammad in Iraq.[2]
