Screaming Soup is an American animated web series that reviews and parodies B-grade sci-fi/horror films. The show is hosted by Deadwest, a brash undead cowboy with a ray gun, and his apocalyptic goat sidekick, Billy. Deadwest is joined by several interchanging co-hosts per episode who help him critique movies using soup ingredients as a metaphor for filmmaking elements they judge for an overall rating of 1-5 with 1 being the lowest. Fans of the series are referred to as Scream Freaks.

History[edit]

Various B-grade horror/sci-fi films are reviewed by horror host Deadwest, an undead cowboy from an alternate dimension called the Crosslands. Striving toward infamy and riches when he was alive, Deadwest’s outlaw lifestyle was cut short in a hail of gunfire. Thanks to being bombarded by radioactive tractor beams from bovine thieving U.F.Os, Deadwest was resurrected from his ditch grave and continued his quest for infamy and fortune while wandering the Crosslands. During his travels, he wrangled a living motorcycle he calls Road Rash and partnered with a runaway beast of the apocalypse named Billy. Together, they found the Howl-Inn: Grub & Spirits, a popular bar full of gnarly creatures and oddities said to have influenced Earth’s horror icons.[1] Here, Deadwest finds inspiration for how to finally achieve his dreams. For worldwide recognition, Deadwest decides he needs to become a monster icon via a top notch horror film. Seeing how many monsters have failed at this same attempt, Deadwest studies any and all horror/sci-fi movies he can get his hands on to learn what combination of filmmaking ingredients make for an A-grade soup of a scary film.[2] Until he learns the perfect recipe for success, Deadwest has many adventures at the Howl-Inn, making new friends and enemies with each review.[3][4]

Original Animated Characters[edit]

Main Cast[edit]

  • Deadwest - An undead gasoline drinking cowboy skeleton on a quest to become widely recognized as an infamous monster movie icon. Quick on the draw with his ray gun he stole from the same aliens who accidentally re-animated him, Deadwest also uses a sawed off double barrel shotgun he calls Kingdom Come. When in tight spots, he will extract the tequila worm living in his ribcage to use as a lasso. Loves to ride and fight, brashly speaks his mind, and loyal to his friends.
  • Billy - A runaway beast of the apocalypse who wants to delay doomsday so he can enjoy all the pleasures of the Crosslands first. He partnered with Deadwest after seeing the exciting life he leads in pursuit of his infamy and fortune. Billy is meek and quiet most the time which hides his dangerous nature most are unaware of.
  • Mandy - Deadwest’s specter girlfriend. A model turned fashion designer, she’s a classy girl with an affection for sugar pumpkins and fell in love with Deadwest for his larger than life ambitions and off color humor.
  • Catfish - One of Deadwest’s closest friends, he is a drunk mutant gill man who’s normally found soaking in a beer barrel. Catfish can be bitter and likes to instigate arguments. He’s usually depressed about his problems communicating with women.
  • Peyote - A werecoyote trucker who is also Deadwest’s closest confidant. He’s a happy go-lucky type who can get easily annoyed.
  • Deadbeat - A mutant zombie punk rocker who is the lead guitarist and singer for the Crosslands band, Toxic Spew. Likes to brag about things he’s done and exaggerate the facts.
  • Eb’nstein - A re-animated corpse comprised of various hip hop/rap artists. A social butterfly of good vibes, he is the easiest going of the group as long as he’s high.

Recurring Cast[edit]

  • TPMummy - A tribal mummy warrior wrapped up in toilet paper. He’s always looking for a fight and often clashes with the mechanical devil bull, Heck Machine.
  • Doc Rex - A mad scientist who is often mistaken for an invisible man due to his excessive injuries resulting in medical bandages over his face.
  • Mexican Dracula - A mariachi vampire who’s claim to fame was playing the Hispanic opposite of Bela Lagosi in the original “Dracula.” The social leper of the group nobody wants to get stuck talking to.
  • Aleena - One of the alluring alien waitresses at the Howl-Inn. She is kind and courteous to most but transforms into her true monstrous form when angered.
  • Heck Machine - The mechanical devil bull at the Howl-Inn.
  • Dr. Rig. R. Mortis MD - A sinister doctor who skulks in the shadows until someone needs medical attention which he uses as an excuse to dissect and dismember for his own sick pleasure.
  • Moshufu Tsung - An Asian kung-fu sorcerer.

Villains[edit]

  • Buzzkill - An ass clown who hosts the Scary Fun Show and wants to see Deadwest ruined after demeaning his show on live graveyard shift TV and entrapping him in a book of the dead.
  • Rook - A hay man obsessed with scaring everyone and rubbing it in their faces.

Rating[edit]

Screaming Soup rates on a 1-5 scale with 1 being the lowest. Using soup ingredients for a metaphor, film reviews are based on their story (meat), poor moments like bogus scares and uneventful time wasters (sours), and praise worthy moments like gory kills and bare breasts (sweets). The results of the ratings are represented by cooking the film’s ingredients via the DVD in a microwave. A 5/5 film nukes out a full blown creature meaning it’s a monster of a film to check out, and lower scores either blow up or ooze out like an in cohesive mess. After every review, Deadwest ends with a disclaimer stating, “But what do I know? I like killer tomato movies.”[5][6]

Awards[edit]

On 4/16/2021, Screaming Soup! won a Silver Bolo Award on Shudder (streaming service)'s The Last Drive-in with Joe Bob Briggs Season 3, Episode 1.
