Seraphine (Singer) is a Chinese-American virtual indie and pop singer based upon the League of Legends character of the same name. Her singing voice has been provided by both Australian singer Jasmine Clarke and Chinese singer Lexie Liu. The character was developed by video game company Riot Games, following the success of previous musical ventures, such as the virtual K-pop group K/DA and the hip hop group True Damage. Seraphine was first introduced to the game's musical alternate universe following the creation of her Twitter and Instagram accounts in June 2020; they contain digital and CGI art of the character, depicting her as a real person living in Los Angeles, similar to what was achieved with K/DA in 2018. Since her introduction to the public, she has released four singles, the first being "Childhood Dreams" released in July of 2020, which garnered over 3 million listeners on Spotify alone. A month later, she would go on to release a cover of K/DA's "POP/STARS" linking the two acts together.[1]

On 4 September 2020, Riot Games announced through the K/DA official twitter account that Seraphine would be collaborating with the group; she did so in the song "MORE", later featured on their EP "ALL OUT". The track debuted at the official League of Legends 2020 World Championships in Shanghai, featuring holographic projections of the characters performing on stage. The song also received a music video on 26 October 2020, which has over 68 million views, as of January 2021.[2]

Appearances[edit]

After her debut appearance on social media in June 2020, Seraphine began to release music through different streaming services, notably SoundCloud, as well as her social media accounts. Three of her singles are covers with her own indie-pop influence, inspired by other artists following the "bedroom music" aesthetic. "Childhood Memories" released on 17 July 2020, a cover from the Norwegian artist "Ary". The song became an instant hit amongst fans of the game as well as K/DA, later becoming a viral sensation. On 22 August 2020, Seraphine would go on to release a cover of K/DA's breakthrough single "POP/STARS", which also became incredibly popular with the public. Seraphine's third single released on 25 September 2020, which was a cover of the song "All The Things She Said" by Russian duo "T.A.T.u", which the artist stated on Twitter she "heard (this song) a long time ago and its been stuck in my head ever since". Finally, on 16 October 2020, the original song "Made Me This Way" was released, which features both English and Mandarin lyrics, representing the character's dual nationality.[3]

After gaining the attention of K/DA on social media, she later appeared as a featuring artist in the group's multilingual song "MORE", after a teaser photo was posted, depicting the four members of K/DA and Seraphine standing outside a recording studio[4]. A month later, after the song was first performed live, a music video for the song released worldwide, featuring the character's in a CGI setting, reminiscent to other popular K-pop groups. Seraphine's appearance was overhauled for this video, with blue hair and a K-pop inspired outfit [5]; the hairstyle change was hinted prior to the release of the video, in a twitter post of Seraphine at a salon. [6]

In League of Legends[edit]

Not only was Seraphine new to the music scene, she was also the newest playable champion for League of Legends at the time. In-game, she is voiced by Michele Panu and is a singing superstar from the city of Piltover, with a magical ability set based upon music. She is typically played as either mid lane as a burst mage or as an enchantress support in the bottom lane. As of the release of the K/DA album "ALL OUT", Seraphine was provided with different skins based on her appearances in the K/DA universe.[7]
