Shahadat Hossain
Dr. Shahadat Hossain, born 2 June 1966, is President of the Chittagong City wing of Bangladesh Nationalist Party.[1][2] He has been is active in Bangladesh Nationalist Party politics for over 40 eyars.[3][4][5] He had also served as the General Secretary for the Chittagong City BNP.[6][7][8]
In the 2018 General Election, he ran for the Member of the Pariament position for the Chittagong 9 (Kotwali) constituency[9]. Prior to the election, he was arrested on false charges, just like many other BNP politicians at the time.[10][11][12] These mass arrests of opposition party members were met with criticisms.[13][14] In an emotional letter written from jail that went viral, Shahadat articulated the plight of opposition party members in an apaprent dictatorship.[15][16] Charges against him were later deferred or dropped. He was released soon after the elections concluded.[17][18]
In 2020, he ran for the Chittagong City Corporation election representing BNP with the Dhaner Shish (Sheaf of Paddy) symbol.[19][20][21] His theme for the campaign was Healthy Chittagong.[22][23] His campaign is supported by ex-ministers Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury and Abdullah Al Noman.[24] Similar to the 2018 General Election, there were complains of obstruction against the ruling party.[25][26] Amidst the Corona situation, with the health and safety of the general public in mind, he was the first to demand rescheduling of the City Corporation Election.[27][28]
During the COVID-19 crisis, he spearheaded the formation of a Coronavirus Monitoring Cell in Chittagong.[29] He distributed food and relief among 20,000 disadvantaged families from his personal fund.[30] In addition to opening up his privately owned Treatment Hospital to Corona patients, he established a 100 bed Corona Isolation Centre in Bakalia.[31] He also regularly provided free telemedicine services to patients from his Facebook page all throughout the crisis. He currently has more than 150,000 followers.[32]
In his professional life, Dr Shahadat is a physician specialising in Sports Medicine, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. He graduated with the MBBS degree from Chittagong Medical College. Later, he completed his post-gradution from HOSMAT Orthopaedics Hospital India on Physical Medicine and was the recipient of the university Gold Medal.[33] He is the owner of a privately owned hospital in Chittagong, Treatment Hospital.[34]
