Shahram Shariati (born 1986) is an Iranian-American who grew up in a government-employed household. His mother retires next year after working as a United States Postal Service mail carrier for over 25 years. His father retired during the pandemic after working at the famous Folsom State Prison. Both parents instilled the importance of helping the community and not judging anyone by their past.

Now, the baton has passed down to Shahram, who has worked for the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency[1] for 10 years and San Francisco Mayor's Office of Housing for 8 years. His work consists of designing infrastructure for sustainable modes of transportation and helping first-time homebuyers navigate the below-market-rate program. He is currently running for mayor in the 2024 San Francisco mayoral election[2].

Early Life, Education and Career

Shahram was born and raised in California. He grew up in South Sacramento, which was not the most ideal location at the time. Pizza could not even be delivered to the Shariati residence because delivery people were getting killed for as little as $20. Shahram's parents did their best to shield him and his younger brother from reality. They each worked two jobs to send their two sons to a private elementary school. Education played a heavy role in Shahram's life, as it was the best way to move up in society.

Shahram's mother is a high school dropout, and his father is a college dropout due to the Iranian Revolution in 1979. Relations between the U.S. and Iran were cut as his father was no longer able to receive funds from Iran to cover tuition. As a result, Shahram's father acquired a job at a restaurant, washing dishes. It was at this restaurant in Wyoming where Shahram's parents met, married, and later moved to California.

Growing up, everyone in the Shariati residence did their best to improve themselves and their livelihood. Shahram's mother received her GED and obtained a job at the post office. Shahram's father moved up in the restaurant industry, working as a manager for several major chains before retiring as a kitchen manager at Folsom State Prison. Shahram's parents were able to purchase a home in Elk Grove, California, a safe suburb of Sacramento with the best school district in the region. After elementary school, Shahram and his brother attended public school and were able to finish their education in the new school district.

Shahram became the first person in the family to graduate from college. He ended up going to his first-choice school, California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, from 2004-2010, and earned three degrees from the institution: a Bachelor of Science in civil engineering, a Master of Science in civil and environmental engineering, and a Master of Business Administration.

After graduating from college, Shahram obtained a job at Bechtel as a civil engineer, construction superintendent, and cost engineer. During his tenure with Bechtel, Shahram lived in San Francisco, California, Doha, Qatar, and Muscat, Oman. He worked on the Hamad International Airport and Muscat International Airport. He was laid off from the company after three years of service and has been working for two San Francisco government agencies, SFMTA and SFMOHCD, ever since.
