Shalu Shamu (born 18 December 1993) is an Indian actress, model, and television personality who predominantly works in the Tamil film industry. She began her career as a child actress in Tamil cinema in Kaadhal Mannan. Later, she returned to Indian cinema as a supporting actress in Varuthapadatha Valibar Sangam.

Early life

Shalu Shamu was born on 18 December in Chennai. Her father died in 2016, and her family comprises herself and her mother, Mrs. R. Radha, and two brothers, R. Velu and R. Ravi. Shalu has received full support from her family for all her endeavors.

Her mother has a mixed Tamil and Malayalam ancestry, while her father was Tamil. She completed her schooling in Chennai and later moved to Bangalore for her undergraduate and post-graduation degrees in college.

Personal life

After completing her higher secondary schooling at Satya Matriculation School, Shamu completed her college education in BCA and MBA (HR) at St. Aloysius College, Bangalore, in 2015. During her college life, she began auditioning for roles in various Tamil movies and TV shows.

Her hobbies include dancing and singing, having completed her arangetram in Bharatanatyam classical dance. Having a keen interest in the finance industry, she is working alongside her brother in a family business. She has also helped a friend manage her organic vegetables business online for a short while and managed online promotions for another friend. For most of these short-term projects, she has worked behind the scenes.

Shalu Shamu was also involved in a social media altercation with super model and actress Meera Mithun.

Career

Shamu began her career as an actress in 2011 when she was still a college student. During this period, she was working as a Video Jockey (VJ) on multiple channels.

Her first cinematic feature was in Varuthapadatha Valibar Sangam (2013) alongside actor Soori. Prior to this, she had featured as a child artist in Kaadhal Mannan in 1998. Her second feature was in Thegidi (2014) as actress Janani Iyer’s friend. She next acted alongside actor Sathish in Tamizhuku En Ondrai Azhuthavum (2015).

Shamu played actress Sridivya’s friend in Eetti (2015) and actress Anjali’s friend in Sakalakala Vallavan (2015). She also acted in Devadass (2015), which was not released. She also played the role of actress Lakshmi Menon’s friend in Rekka (2016). In 2017, she played actor Black Pandi’s pair in Keikraan Meikkiran, Amala Paul’s friend in Thiruttu Payale 2 (2017), and also starred in Neruppu Da (2017).

She played the role of actor Robo Shankar’s pair and actor Sivakarthikeyan’s friend in Mr. Local (2019) and played a supporting role in Irandam Kuththu (2020). Her upcoming movies include the role of actor Krishna’s friend in Rayar Parambarai (2021), a supporting role in VS 46 (date unannounced), and a supporting role in a new project with actor-director Prabhu Deva (date unannounced).

Additional projects

Shamu has been featured on various TV shows on Vijay TV, Zee Tamil, Sun TV, and given guest appearances on several special events and shows. She has anchored various reality TV shows (non-fiction shows) as well. Apart from this, she started modelling about three years ago. What started as a photo shoot to try something new turned into a passion project she enjoys doing.

Shamu plans to enter the world of web series and has almost finalized two projects. Many more projects are also in the pipeline. In future features in Tamil cinema, she hopes to play the lead role, despite being open to playing supporting roles as well. Additionally, she displays a keen interest in entering the production line and investing in a serial production house.
