K. Shanmugam (credited as Shan Karuppusamy or Shan) is a Tamil writer from Perundurai in Erode District, now living in Chennai in the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu.
His best-known and most critically acclaimed work is Vettaattam, his first novel released in 2017, which is a work of fiction set against political events familiar to state politics.
Shan's output includes two poetry collections, two article collections, one novel, and numerous other articles and short stories. He wrote the script for the Tamil movie NOTA.
Personal life
Shanmugam was born in 1976 in Erode District, Tamil Nadu, to P. Karuppusamy and K. Parvathi. Karuppusamy was a former leader in Thalakkarai Pudhur Village, Perundurai, and his mother is from Thiruvenkatampalayam.
He completed his Bachelor of Architecture at Adhiyamaan College of Engineering. He worked as a junior architect for a couple of years before moving into Information Technology. He worked extensively on technologies related to eLearning and currently works as Senior Director - Technology at Origin Learning Solutions in Guindy, Chennai.

Shanmugam met Pradeepa in 2003. It was an arranged marriage. Their daughter Harini was born in 2004 and Megha in 2010.
