"May (Alternate Mix)" is a song recorded by American singer-songwriter and record producer Marian Renta released digitally as a single on July 27, 2021. The single served as a remix single consisting of an alternate version of "May" from the Great Deep EP (2021). The song bridges alternative pop with soul, and expands on the woeful lyrical theme of Renta's previous studio EP effort, Headfirst. The original EP version of the song was never released as a single but was the version used for the song's music video.

Composition and recording[edit]
Original EP version
The theme of "May" was wholly based on a dating experience Renta had during the spring and summer of 2020. The song speaks of reminiscing over a past love interest, and it explores feelings of nostalgia brought on by the anniversary of meeting said love interest. Renta delves into these themes through storytelling and a play-by-play style of songwriting. It is composed in the key of C♯ minor, and features bass, piano, and lead guitar. The song is written and produced by Renta herself, in a downtempo, cut-time style. Recording and mastering took place in Renta's home recording studio in July 2021, and all of the vocals were recorded using an Aston Spirit condenser microphone. The vocal arrangements are simplistic with occasional use of layering and background vocals. They are performed in a mezzo-soprano tessitura, and are expressed through melisma in the chest and head voice ranges.
Alternate Mix version
The alternate version of "May" was released digitally as a single on July 27, 2021, almost two weeks after the Great Deep EP was released. "May (Alternate Mix)" contains the same vocals with an entirely different instrumental. The alternate version contains a Jazz guitar playing on the "2" and "4" in addition to a different piano arrangement and lead guitar accentuation. This version delivers a blues sound akin to 1960s Americana, while providing more haze and smoke.
Music video[edit]
The song's music video was directed by Renta and was filmed at a loft studio in Long Island City, New York in August 2021. The video premiered on YouTube on August 25, 2021. It features Renta singing at a piano in a dark loft as moments of visual memories are intercut throughout. The music video uses the original EP version for its audio. Filming took half a day and took place during a thunderstorm that caused mass flooding in the New York City region the evening and night of the shoot.
