Hieromonk Simon or Simon (Russian: Иеромонах Симон, born Onegin Yusif oglu Hajigasimov, Оне́гин Юси́ф оглы́ Гаджикаси́мов, Azerbaijani: Onegin Yusif oğlu Hacıqasımov, 1937–2002) was a Soviet songwriter, author of poems of many popular songs, later hieroschemamonk of Optina Monastery of Azerbaijani origin.
Early life[edit]
He was born on 4 June 1937[1] in Baku, Azerbaijan SSR to Yusif bey Hajigasimov (1892-1960) and Mahtaban Hajigasimova (1905-1980). His father worked for NKVD, his mother was teacher of Russian literature and poetry expert. He was named after his mother's favorite hero - Eugene Onegin. He had two elder half-brothers named Faig and Fakhri,[2] as well as a younger full brother, Nizami (1942-2003) named after Nizami Ganjavi.[3] He studied at Baku Central School No. 6 until age of 17 when he left to study at Maxim Gorky Literature Institute.
Activity[edit]
In 1957, after graduating from the institute, Onegin arrived at the All-Union Radio, where he worked for the next 30 years. At the same time he wrote poems and collaborated with famous composers like David Tukhmanov, Vladimir Shain, Aleksandr Zatsepin, Raimonds Pauls. These collaborations turned out to be Soviet hit songs, such as the song "Aleshkina Lyubov" (Алёшкина любовь) which was included on the first EP by the band Vesyolye Rebyata, released in 1970 with a circulation of 15 million copies, unprecedented until then in the USSR. The band subsequently performed about ten hits written by Hajigasimov. Among them were "First Love", "Holding Hands Together", "Your Tender Name", "Sleep", "Rides a Cowboy" (respectively in Russian: «Первая любовь», «Взявшись за руки вдвоем», «Имя твое нежное», «Сон», «Скачет ковбой»).
Another Soviet hit was "Oriental Song" (Russian: Восточная песня), created with composer David Tukhmanov and performed by Valery Obodzinsky. "Moonlight Serenade", "Layla", "Conversation of Birds", "Old Mill" (Russian: «Лунная серенада», «Лайла», «Разговор птиц», «Старая мельница») from the repertoire of Muslim Magomayev were written by Hajigasimov as well. He is also known as a translator of many foreign songs into Russian.
Singers such as Polad Bulbuloglu,[4] Iosif Kobzon, Alla Pugacheva, Yuri Antonov, Sofia Rotaru, Valeri Obodzinsky, Aida Vedishsheva, Rashid Behbudov, Ogtay Aghayev, Gaya Quartet also collaborated with Hajigasimov between 1960 and 1980.
Conversion to Orthodoxy[edit]
After being handed a Bible by Anna Kachalina, then musical editor of Melodiya, he left for Belarus, where he was baptized in a small rural church in 1985, taking the Russian name Oleg. In 1987, Onegin left his family for Optina Hermitage, where he became a monk. A year later, he became a novice of the monastery on 3 December 1989, where he lived for four years. He was tonsured rasophore with the name Athanasius in honor of Athanasius of Athos during Apostles' Fast by Eulogius (Smirnov). He became schemamonk with the name Siluan in 1991, tonsured by Benedict (Penkov), deputy head of the monastery. He rose to be hieroschemamonk and finally adopting the name Simon later. He became a wandering monk in 1998, leaving the monastery.
He died on June 30, 2002, from cancer. He was buried in the cemetery of the village of Lyamtsino, Moscow.
