Sivá Brada is a travertine mound located near Spišské Podhradie. At the top, there's a mineral spring forming a small lake. Multiple cold water springs are present in the area which is also classified as a national nature reserve.[1]
The mound is located in the Hornádska kotlina in the overburden of sediments of the Central Carpathian Paleogene basin. Like the other travertine piles in the vicinity of Spišské Podhradie, Sivá Brada is also a consequence of the existence of crossing faults in the eastern continuation of Vikartovský chrbát and faults limiting the Branisko.[2] Along the faults, there is an exit of circulating groundwater rich in CO2 from the underlying Mesozoic limestones in the deeper parts of the basin. Travertines are of Holocene to recent age. The current active pile was created as a parasitic karst spring at the foot of an older pile several decades ago.
