Sivan Sir
Sri Sivan SAR or Sir was the younger brother of Sri Sri Chandrashekarendra Saraswati, the 68th seer of Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam.
He was born on 03 Oct 1904, in the month of Purattasi under the star Pushyam, in the hamlet of Echangudi, near Thiruvaiyaru. The child was named 'Sadasivam', the 4th son to the parents BrahmaShri Subrahmanya Shastri of Thiruvidaimarudur and mother MadhuShri Mahalakshmi Ammal, who belonged to the ancestry of Sri Govinda Dikshita.[1]
In His early days at Kumbakonam, Sri SAR was a renowned photographer and artist, while undergoing a brief stage of life as a Grihastha.[2] Soon, the profession and with it worldly attachment renounced Sri SAR. He undertook the divine mission of establishing and lovingly sustaining holy gardens called Nandavanams at two places: The Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam premises at Kumbakonam, and the Sri Paramasivendra Sarasvati Swami Adhishtanam at Thiruvenkadu.[3]
The unmistakable demeanor of a Sage adorned Him : A frail frame, ochre clad with a powerful gaze, directed at those fortunate to come under His 'radar', as He often referred. It is no surprise that Chakras (Concentric formations) were on all the 10 fingers, the sign of an Emperor, but of the Spiritual realm. What was rather, a matter of great wonder was the bodily intake of not even a palm of rice, a morsel rather, amounting to a sparrow's fill. Not a drop of water was downed for more than half a century! What we consider essential didn't matter the slightest to this One who sanctified His time.
His Magnum Opus was the book " Yenipadigalil Maanthargal " ISBN 9789386433183 Search this book on . ( Spiritual gradations in Mankind ), which he has revealed is the "Culmination of my Tapas (penance) of over 40 years". It remains a perpetual spring of all that is Omniscient about our Sacred Literature, giving Wisdom to the adept and the layman alike, inimitable and crystal clear in delivery. Yenippadigalil Maanthargal is ~650 pages with intricate details that Sadasiva has elucidated on various topics. The book outlines the characteristics of 11 gradations in human life: Paavi, Pamaran, Viveki, Sadhu, Sirandha Viveki, Muttrina Viveki, Deiva Viveki, Devia Sadhu, Mahaan, Gynani and Thuravi. The first part of the book has contents such as culture, universal religion "devia madham", Vedas, the importance of cows, thoughtless use of science, the impurity in gluten and alternate choices such as spelt and details of mythology, various civilizations, etc.
The second part of the book covers key incidents from the lives of many evolved souls who lived their lives as humans, and were tested but persevered the twists and turns of their fate. Stories of [Karaikal Ammaiyar], Theertha Narayanar, Narayana Theerthar, Nandhanar, Manikavachakar, Badrachala Ramadas, Chinnan Samiyar, Sadasiva Brahmendra are just a few to name from the book. In all the chapters Sri Sivan SAR calls out attention to specifics that act as a guiding light to refine our behavior.[4]
Sri SAR left the mortal coil on 7 March 1996, aged 91, on a Phalguna Krishna-Paksha Dvithiyai in Tnagar, Chennai. His mortal remains were cremated on the same day. Nevertheless, He continues to consume the hearts and minds of His devotees ever increasingly. [5] [6] [7] [8]
Sri Siva Sagaram Trust (SST) was formed in Chennai to propagate the message and teachings of Sri Sivan SAR.[9] A documentary on the life of SAR was released by the trust.[10] His biography was published as a book "Siva Sagarathil Sila Alaigal" [11]
