Swami Avdheshanand Giri is an Indian Hindu spiritual leader,[1] author, philosopher and preacher from Bulandshahr, India.[2][3][4][5] He holds the high level Hindu spiritual title of Acharya Mahamandaleshwar of Juna Akhada, the oldest and largest order of sadhus (sometimes referred to as yogis) in India.[6][7][8][9][10] He has initiated about one million Naga Sadhus, a Sadhu sect,[11] and he is their first Guru, or spiritual advisor.[12][13][14] His seat is in Kankhal, Haridwar, known as Harihar Ashram, which also houses the Paradeshwar Mahadev temple and the Mrityunjay Mahadev temple.
Swami Avdheshanand Giri is chairman of the association of Hindu religious organisation Hindu Dharma Acharya Sabha.[15][16][17][18]
Early life and sanyas[edit]
Swami Avdheshanand Giri was born into a Brahmin family of Khurja, Bulandshahr district, Uttar Pradesh.[citation needed]
He met Swami Avadhoot Prakash Maharaj, an expert in yoga and versatile in knowledge about Vedas and others. Swami Avdheshanand Giri learnt Vedant philosophy and yoga from him.[19]
In 1985 he met his Guru, former Shankaracharya Swami Satyamitranand Giri and took the Hindu ritual sannyas deeksha from him. Thus he entered the holy Juna Akhara, the biggest of the 13 Akharas of Sadhus and was named Swami Avdheshanand Giri.[20]
In 1998, at the Haridwar Kumbh, Swami Avdheshanand Giri was appointed as Acharya Mahamandaleshwar of Juna Akhada.[21] While there are many mahamandaleshwar in an Akhada, there is only one Acharya Mahamanaleshwar who is the spiritual guide and public face of the monastic order.[22][23]
Work and public life[edit]
Giri is the member of Shri Amarnath Shrine Board.[24][25] He is also Chairman of the Hindu Dharma Acharya Sabha.[26] Hindu Dharma Acharya Sabha is the apex forum which has more than 130 Hindu religious leaders heading Mathas and Peetha in India. The Sabha covers virtually all the sampradayas (ancient Hindu religious denominations propounding diverse traditional expressions of Hindu spirituality and practice).[27]
Presently, he is the President of the Samanvaya Seva Trust, Haridwar which has several branches in India and abroad. The trust includes the famous Bharat Mata Mandir, Haridwar.[28][29]
During the 2021 Haridwar Kumbh Mela, a religious gathering, Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi telephoned Swami Avdheshanand Giri to conclude the Kumbh Mela early in the wake of the second wave of Covid-19.[30][31] The Kumbh Mela was concluded the same day.[32][33] In March 2022, he appeared as guest judge in Zee TV reality show Swarn Swar Bharat.[34][35]
He was the keynote speaker at the UNO for ‘Responsible Leadership Summit’ held in May 2019. The summit was attended by about 200 leaders from around the world.[36] In 2008 Giri also attended Israeli Presidential Conference 'Facing Tomorrow'.[37]
Education and teachings[edit]
Swami Avdheshanand Giri has studied Vedanta and Ancient Indian Philosophy. He is a graduate in Sanskrit, and in 2008 he was conferred with the honorary degree of D. Litt. from Vikram University, Ujjain.[38]
Spirtuality[edit]
Giri's spiritual discourses are regularly aired on various religious and spiritual TV channels such as Sanskar TV,[39][40] and he is invited to speak on spiritual and religious issues at various events such as Vivekananda International Foundation (Desh, Samaj aur Vyakti).[41][42][43][44]
He also writes as a columnist in various newspapers.[45]
Swami Avdheshanand Giri has many high-profile followers, including Bollywood stars and politicians, and the Harihar ashram continues to receive many high profile visitors. In October 2019, President of India, Shri Ramnath Kovind visited his ashram, when he went for the IIT Roorkee convocation.[46] In 2018, Home minister Amit Shah and RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat[47] had also been to Harihar Ashram.[48][49][50]
