Software industry in Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu is one of the largest contributor of software exports majorly from its cities Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai and Vellore. State has 526 engineering colleges, the most for any state in India giving the services industry access to qualified and skilled labour force. The state has a wide network of about 110 industrial parks and estates offering developed plots with supporting infrastructure.[1] Also, the state government is promoting other industrial parks like Rubber Park, Apparel Parks, Floriculture Park, TIDEL Park for IT/ITS, TICEL BioPark for Biotechnology,[2] Siruseri IT Park, Elcot SEZ and Agro Export Zones among others. Tamil Nadu has the largest number of Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in India.[3]

Chennai IT/ITeS[edit]

Chennai is the second largest software exporter in India, next only to Bangalore. India's largest IT park is housed at Chennai. Software exports from Tamil Nadu during 2017–2018 rose 8.6% per cent to touch 1,11,179 crore, involving a workforce of 780,000,[7] and the city is the hub for deep tech startup companies.[8] Many software and software services companies have development centres in Chennai, which contributed 14 percent of India's total software exports of 14,42,140 lakh during 2006–07, making it the second largest Indian city software exporter following Bangalore and the city is the home for 7 top rated IT companies out of 15 in India.[9] The Tidel Park in Chennai was billed as Asia's largest IT park when it was built.[10][11] Major software companies have their offices set up here, with some of them making Chennai their largest base.Chennai is the largest hub for e-publishing, as there are 67 e-publishing units registered with the STPI and many Rs.8300-Cr data centers, digital hubs are in the process of development.[12][13]

Since the late 1990s, software development and business process outsourcing and more recently electronics manufacturing have emerged as major drivers of the city's economic growth. Chennai has been rated as the most attractive Indian city for offshoring services according to A T Kearney's Indian City Services Attractiveness Index 2005.[14] After Bangalore Chennai leads No. 2 in software space absorption.[15]

The city is now the second largest exporter of IT and IT enabled Services in the country behind Bangalore.

Tidel Park—one of the largest software parks in Asia—was set up on 4 July 2000 in Chennai.

The IT Corridor, on Old Mahabalipuram Road in the southeast of the city houses several technology parks, and, when completed, will provide employment to close to 300,000 people. Besides the existing Tidel Park, two more Tidel Parks are on the anvil in the IT corridor. One is under construction at the Siruseri IT Special Economic Zone ("SEZ") and the other one is being planned at the current location of MGR Film City which is just before the existing Tidel Park, in Taramani on the IT Corridor. A number of SEZ have emerged in and around Chennai. The Mahindra World City, New Chennai, a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) with one of the world's largest high technology business zones, is currently under construction in the outskirts of Chennai. It also includes the World's largest IT Park by Infosys.[17]

Chennai IT/ITeS SEZ

A number of Special Economic Zones (SEZ) projects has emerged along the Grand Southern Trunk Road (NH 45), making it the SEZ corridor of Chennai. It includes MEPZ SEZ established in 1984,[18] Mahindra World City, New Chennai, Shriram Properties's Gateway SEZ, Estancia SEZ and ETL Infrastructure. It is also emerging as a major IT SEZ region with a number of huge investments by Infosys. Infosys has set up its largest development center in Mahindra SEZ while India Land Tech Park is developing a massive 500-acre (2.0 km2) SEZ which is estimated to have 20,900,000 sq ft (1,940,000 m2) office space for both IT and Electronics use. Shriram The Gateway SEZ, is an integrated township with IT/ITeS SEZ residential and mall, which is also home for IT majors like Accenture, ReDIM Information Systems, later the IT park is expanded to 4.6 million sft in association with Xander Group[19] and EISL is an IT/ITES SEZ by ETL Infrastructure at Chengalpattu on 260 acres (1.1 km2) is in the process of development.[20]

Chennai Software services

Chennai houses the permanent back office of the World Bank, which is one of the largest buildings owned by the bank outside its headquarters in Washington, DC.[21] The Chennai office, administrative and IT services of the bank, including the bank's software based analytical work in bond valuation which is estimated to be US$100 billion.[22]

Chennai SaaS Capital of India

Chennai has emerged as the "SaaS Capital of India".[23][24][25][26][27] The SaaS sector in/around Chennai generated US$1 Billion in revenue and employed about 10000 personnel in 2018.[28]

Coimbatore IT/ITeS[edit]

The city is the second largest software producer in Tamil Nadu, next only to Chennai. IT and BPO industry in the city has grown greatly with the launch of TIDEL Park Coimbatore & Wipro Software Development Centre in ELCOT SEZ, KCT TechPark, Hanudev Infopark, Rathinam Technopark, KGISL Campus, Span Venture SEZ, Elysium Central and other planned IT parks in and around the city. It is ranked at[29] 17th among the global outsourcing cities. Companies like Amazon, Altran, Bosch, Cognizant, Ford, Tata Consultancy Services, Wipro, HCL Technologies, Ericsson, Cameron International, NTT DATA, Harman, ThoughtWorks, McWane, State Street Corporation, Tessolve, IQVIA, Deloitte, Owler, Access Healthcare, UST Global, Impiger Technologies Pvt. Ltd, Pactron India Pvt Ltd and Nous Infosystems having a presence in the city. Cognizant has second largest headcount in the country with more than 15000+ employees in the city. And Bosch has the second largest development center in Coimbatore outside Germany with 5500+ employees in the city. Software export stood more than 15,000 crores for the financial year 2018–2019, which is second largest in the state after Chennai.[30]

With abundance of engineering colleges and availability of skilled resources Coimbatore is becoming a go-to destination for the technology startups recently, companies like RFPIO, headquartered in Portland, USA is building enterprise scale products with engineering team operating from Coimbatore.

TICEL Bio-Park III, a Bio-Technology Park is being constructed in 10 acres of land at Somayampalayam, Coimbatore which is set to open in Jan-2020

Due to huge demand from IT Companies for space at Coimbatore, TIDEL Park Coimbatore-Phase-II is planned to be built within ELCOT SEZ in additional 6 acres of land with 5 Lakh sq.feet space at 250 crores.

IT Parks

IT/ITeS Madurai[edit]

IT industry is a major contributor the economy of Madurai. Software Technology Parks of India, an agency of the Government of India, has authorized several companies in Madurai to receive benefits under its national information technology development program. But still the city needs more investment and care to be taken with respect to growth in IT industry. Madurai houses multi-national corporations such as Honeywell Technologies India, HCL, Satyam , and Sutherland Global Services.[31][32][33] Tamil Nadu government has established two IT- Special Economic Zone(SEZ)s in Madurai.[34][35] Also Many MaduraiStartups working with various products with real passion.

IT/ITeS Vellore[edit]

As per the policy directive of the Government of Tamil Nadu, ELCOT (Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu Limited) promotes IT Parks in Tier I and Tier II cities. Integrated information technology campuses consist of IT buildings as well as residential and social infrastructure facilities. These campuses are established with a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) in Vellore and other Tier II Cities.[36] In December 2012, the then Chief Minister Jayalalithaa announced a feasibility study to build an IT park in Vellore.[37]

India BPO Promotion Scheme[edit]

Tamil Nadu has got 8,387 seats allotment under India Business process outsourcing (BPO) and created jobs to 8,387 people and indirect employment to 16,774[38]
